it's a bad habit that i try hard to avoid falling into, so it really jumps out at me when i hear it. ...and in that video, i heard it A LOT!
it always sounds a bit like self-sabotage to me. as if the speaker is subconsciously de-legitimizing what they are saying...or at least distancing themselves from it.

Yeah I think that's part of it, perhaps. It's really easy to sound like a wank when you're talking about music, after all.

This is a nice long interview with Elliott Sharp:

This whole documentary is good, but this part contains some hilarious bits regarding Ry Cooder's time in and departure from The Magic Band:

speaking of Cooder, I don't know that much about him, but someone recommended this interview and it has some funny moments, especially around the 32 minute mark, a story about not knowing how to use a fuzz pedal:

Ben Ratliff isn't a musician, he's a critic, but from my limited experience he's a very good one. I'm reading his book Every Song Ever right now and I really, really enjoy his way of connecting different qualities in music and relating them to broader human behavior. & as a bonus, that chat with Kamasi Washington is a goodie, as well.
