Not sure if these're actually humbuckers. Sometimes some of these guitars have pickups which look like humbuckers, but're actually single coils.

Those look like something based on or to look like gold foils actually.

Yeah, maybe. They also kinda remind me a little of Höfner staple pickups.
Difficult to say what they really are without getting a closer look. The Japanese at that time were just copying whatever was selling and you know how wacky the Japanese can sometimes be. So, they could be based on anything.
Frank at Drowning in Guitars has compiled a rough guide to strange Japanese pickups.

Anyone ever played gold foils? What they like? Humbucker-ish? single coil-ish?

Most gold foils are single coils. There're some that're humbuckers though.
Many of the ones I've played sound pretty clear with a fairly even response across the frequency spectrum. They tend to be a bit warm & rich sounding and cut nicely. So, overall, a pickup with broad applications.

Nice bump, thank you, friendship.
These aren't humbuckers, but I found photos of the same model Welson I posted earlier. These are stock:

… and here's the bass version:
If you guys see any of those for sale, please, let me know. I'm really interested.

That Xtone looks pretty nice. What's the story with them?
I miss humbuckers

Those Xtones've made all over the place. That one's Chinese. It's cheap, but I'm still not totally convinced it'd be worth it. Not fully hollow either.

It does look nice though, very tempting.
Plus, I've got no money. So, one of these days, I'll eventually have a guitar with humbuckers. Don't know when though.

Yeah I especially miss a fat round neck humbucker. I can sort of get there by rolling off the tone knob with the P-90s but it's not quite the same.

If you can find one of these, they're usually quite cheap and great guitars. Chinese crap though, so might require some finetuning. (Keiper 115CS)
