Deadheads talk about finding "the space" in something.... I dunno exactly what they mean but I assume it's that balance betweeen what you play and what you don't play? I dunno man, I only like 40 minute plus versions of Dark Star. Most studio Dead recordings can suck a lemon.....

I don't know Eternal Tapestry. I know you're big into Nadja, and I'd say their quieter stuff is pretty psych.

Yeah, the collabs especially with Fear Falls Burning, Atavist, Galena, Troum... all excellent, and venturing more into ambient than "doomgaze".... in particular I thought the latest one is damn near incredible. I can't wait for my copy to arrive from Essence Music.....

Nadja is excellent. I particularly dig their collab with Pyramids. Not really "metal" at all, just super gorgeous & immersive. I guess I tend to gravitate to their less "metal" sounding stuff.

Also, my guess is anyone who thinks music with "songs" or words can't be psychedelic has never heard Legendary Pink Dots or Edward Ka-Spel.

As to bands like Tame Impala or that new band Temples...for me at least, my "these people are faking it" alarm goes off whenever I hear music that's basically a pastiche of late 60s "psych." Or the "classical" psychedelia as it's been called here. Not that my opinion matters in terms of how individual tuned-in listeners feel about it.

I guess I don't really understand this concept. It's not like they are lying about getting shot in order to up their rap game street cred. How does utilizing a sound that you like mean that you are faking it?

You needn't understand it. I shouldn't even have said it because it comes off as prescriptivist & I generally don't roll that way. It's a visceral reaction to pastiche artists I get from time to time. Temples might argue they aren't doing pastiche but that's how I hear it. They may be totally sincere, I don't know.

My bullshit detector goes off a lot too for a multitude of genres, but that's just me. It doesn't mean anything except "I'm calling a false, do not entry"

Are they? What do I care? But I support any other musician I respect by buying their records, and I don't buy records from falses......

Right on. For example, Verve's A Storm In Heaven clearly comes from a late-60s/early-70s place, but whether you like the record or not they clearly (or in this case hazily) projected something of their own into it. Similarly Thee Oh Sees, while you can draw a clear line back to Nuggets, they still do something that's THEIRS. I don't get that feeling from a band like Temples, but hey, it's their first record and they all look like they're 15 or whatever, so their first paint-by-numbers effort could lead to something awesome down the road. I can certainly appreciate their record from a clinical production standpoint though. It SOUNDS really cool.

But this convo is kinda a sidebar to the "what is psychedelic" one, so apologies for the derail.

I don't even know who Temples are. I saw the Entrance Band open up for Sonic Youth once, I was impressed at her ability to operate a pedalboard in high heels but I certainly didn't get any psychedelic vibes from them. Maybe others? Great if you do.

It's a little hastily on my part to apply the same standards of falseness to psych music as I do to metal. But what can you do? Ghost and Deafhaven and Twilight are a false. You can just smell it.

Anyone who bases falseness on their fans is a false. Falseness comes from within. Mikael Akerfeld is not a false. However, Opeth fans are false. Even more perplexing, Opeth are awesome.
