I agree that this is how boards should be voted upon, and i'm more likely to vote for a board that is more unusual like a shoebox pedal board. What i meant with the post counts is the likelyhood of being put against a large board with a low post count would be significantly decreased in comparison to the other categories. Even if there are large boards in the low post count category if there's more people like you and me voting then the big boards become redundant.

Size definitely doesn't matter. I'd vote based on a combination of selection and aesthetics. And bigger boards are usually lacking in both departments. In other news I have bought a pedalboard proper so i won't be excluded from this party.
A shoebox top is damn cool. I might have used something similar a while ago. Maybe a banana crate? Proved not too practical unfortunately. The rim was too high. Now a shoebox top...

Do you know that feeling that sometimes you have to buy something so that you might not feel like shit for a minute or two? That's how I got to buy that pedalboard. DIY boards are way cooler. But I don't actually have the patience. Been meaning to build one for almost a year and never got around to it. Now at least I have a board. (Shitty as it may be.)

Just buy lots of velcro, then scramble around your house, looking for anything that will work. That is EXACTLY what I did.

I have had 2 boards that I was very proud of One was an old dresser drawer I flipped upside down and ran the wiring underneath, drilled some holes in the top
I also got an old FlannelGraph from my church and used that for a while
Using store bought boards leaves me with some limits currently but I have an old headboard in my garage that looks promising right now

What you are forgetting about is that with bigger boards comes alot more room for creativity. If you only have 5 pedals there's not really much you can do other than fit them snuggly against each other. The bigger boards can have multiple layers, advanced wirings, multiple loops going on and much more crazyness.
And on the ranking system, i don't really see that there is a relationship between board size and post count. I've bee on a bunch of gear forums and probably have a few thousand posts if you add them all up. If i enter this i will most likely enter with my gig board which consists of 20 pedals, i'd really think it's unfair that i'd be going against someone who just got into pedalboarding with 5 pedals. I know because i've been in the same situation.
I've used shelves, desk tops, brief/suitcases, etc. I still use the briefcases for storage but my pedals are on an actual board now. Got it for the cheaps. I still want to make a few though. Dovetailed, stained, all that good wood shaz.

Yeah, it's not fair If you're just learning about something you shouldn't expect to automatically be the best at it, that's silly.
I made one by cutting a plank of wood into 2 pieces like 1/3 and 2/3 of the length, stuck the smaller one on top of the other and screwed on some little rubber feet. And voila, 2 level pedalboard. Pretty frickin heavy though, and not really big enough now I have more pedals...Since it only cost about £1 for the feet and I used some wood we had lying around I guess that's cool though.
And about the size thing, I dunno if size does matter that much. I'd be more inclined to vote for a board with 3 amazing, versatile, interesting, rare pedals than one with 20 standard boss digitech pedals for example. On the other hand, if two board have the same pedals except one of them has more, it's pretty obvious which to vote for... There are reasons for and against it, but we could just ignore it if it's all friendly and more an excuse to show off our boards and have a cool collection thread than a serious competition, and make the categories different from the standard size/post count.
So we decided on doing a Contest? Yes. Nomination process? Yes. A separate thread for all nominated boards (locked)? Yes.
Still no category decision, though.
As far as the Prize goes: I offer printing and sending t-Shirts to the category winners (4?). But someone has to make an awesome graphic. Secret? No preview?
If i enter, i will be entering with 6 or 7 pedals (and i'm not new to pedal collecting i just have no need for 20+ pedals) on a pedaltrain board, nothing spectacular. I know i will be against boards that have 20+ pedals also. There's no actual prize, it's about building comraderie and at most winning bragging rights. The reason i suggested the post count categorys is to encourage newcomers to feel welcomed and have a chance to show people what they got, the guys with moderate post counts can show off what they've been working on and encourage them staying here and posting, and the upper 2 categories are established members we know their not going anywhere so that is where the true bragging rights boards will come out i guarantee. If your only concerned with having the biggest and baddest board and you want to wave those bragging rights around like a flag over your head then cool lets go with the board size categories. Just remember when i go to vote i will take into account which category i'm in and decide which board to vote for on that, i'm less likely to vote on a 20 pedal board in a low post count category because your obviously not new to pedals, just the board. I'm more likely to vote for the guy with a shoebox for a board and only three pedals that are made by the pedal builders here on this site. I believe we also agreed that if we do the baord size categories you can't nominate yourself, someone else must nominate you, which means if you have a low post count you better get out there and let people know what you ahve so that someone nominates you, which is alot more frustrating for a new comer. I feel that the contest should be more community building centered and less bragging rights centered and should be fun for all, thats why i suggested the post count categories. Also i'm not involved in this contest at all except for expressing my ideas in this thread, btw who is going to be running this and how are we going to select the categories?

Alright, i'm with you. Post count is the best way to go.
