Well shit, I'm bored at work so I finally actually checked out the Matriarch demos. It does sound really, really good and would integrate with my setup a lot better than my Peak does. I wouldn't spend $2k on it, but I could maybe justify some kind of trade situation...

The architecture essentially makes it Moog's version of the Korg Mono/Poly (mono/duo/quad paraphonic with a sequencer and an arp that can cycle through voices, each of which can have their own waveform/octave settings), with stereo filtering (2 peaks) and stereo analog delay built in. It's quite a different synth than the Grandmother, and even more different than the Sub37.
Obviously it'd be great if it was cheaper, but $2k isn't nuts for this IMO, especially considering the Pro 2 retails for $2k. Obviously both have different feature-sets, but in terms of architecture it's probably the closest synth you'll find on the market (unless you get a vintage Mono/Poly like I did, which can cost up to $2500 for one in good condition, freshly serviced). It has 3x as many patch points as the Grandmother FWIW.
Despite Moog's popularity, it's still a small company. They had 62 employees in 2015. Obviously it has grown since then, but I'd be surprised if the count was close to or over 100.
I'll happily pay the Moog tax tbh. Give me the Fatar keys because fuck a bad keyboard. Cutting costs on keyboards is lame considering the race to the bottom can't be beaten, Behringer will always win.
When the alternative is buying something from an unoriginal psychopath's manufacturing city with inhumane working conditions, the choice is simple for me. (With the exception of a Pro One, Jupiter 8, and/or Arp 2600 reissue, I'll probably buy that lol.)
The stereo analog delay with midi sync is at least $700 worth, it's like the martriaech has a Minifooger in it.

Yeah, I'll eat my earlier words, the more I've thought about the Matriarch, the more I'm sold on it. I know I already mentioned this, but I'm actually somewhat seriously considering selling my Peak to fund one.

I ordered one.
As a tip, I ordered through Guitar Center; I got a 20% off coupon (in an email) on a single purchase which excluded Moog, but in the live chat I was still able to get the discount applied.

Nice. I'd probably buy one if I could sell my Sub37 and Minitaur. That would get me a good chunk of the way there.

Yeah, I'm considering moving some stuff to get a Matriarch later this year. Even some equipment I hadn't considered selling before. But I love the looks of the feature set right now.

After fiddling around on modulargrid I can understand the price a bit better. The only thing I couldn’t justify with buying something like the Matriarch. If you absolutely want all those features, it’s a no brainer. But for $2k you can make a pretty solid modular system, and I don’t think I’d build a Matriarch if I was putting together a modular system.

Having built up a fairly large modular system and then downsizing it to the bare minimum, I agree that building something like the Matriarch in the modular world doesn't really make sense. There's just so many amazing subtractive synth options in the non-modular world, that it is kind of a waste of money to build a simple subtractive synth in modules. I didn't learn this until I picked up a Sub 37 and realized that it can do the same things as most of my rack and it can do them a lot better. Modular is really good for focusing on weird sound design options that aren't available in a standard subtractive synth.
The Grandmother and Matriarch have been interesting me because they are really good subtractive synths, but there's so many possibilities to interact with my modular setup, which at this point does not have a normal VCO, envelope, filter, etc.

I actually wanted to see the Rêver in tennis ball green or cotton candy bubble gum, so I'm quite pleased with these bright variations. I didn't understand the grey launch. With Rêver being French for
dream, who wants grey dreams? Seemed rather uninspiring.
