Get a gold filter?
Not as clean a cup as paper filters, but you'll never run out of filters and they're much more difficult to bust open.

I don’t really like my gold filter. There’s too much sediment at the bottom. But maybe my grinder just isn’t good enough. I use melitta filter paper for one of my brewers, and I use hario paper for the other. Neither break. The trick is to fold the paper gently then let the paper fully soak up hot water so it’s saturated. Chuck the water out. In with your grounds then pour as you prefer.

Well, if you're used to paper filters, there's gonna be a little adjustment. There'll always be a little sediment w/ a gold filter.
Yep, as you say, it's all in the technique.

Does anyone have experience with a Senseo coffee pad (not pod) brewer? Composting the spent pad makes it seem like less of an ecological disaster than the pod machines. I’m starting to look into whether this is a viable gift for Missus Fission.

I have been out of this discussion for
too long.
I got rid of my La Marzocco GB/5 and Anfim, drank that and gave too much money to a girl.
I’m lucky enough to generally work in places where I like the roasters so my needs are met.
Homewise, I’m replacing a stolen Comandante Grinder with a Fellow Ode V2, and a Chemex, but I’ve lost
six of those through clumsy trainees so I also have a couple of Kalita Wave Stainless Steel lying around, which also produce an excellent brew. A variable temperature kettle with a gooseneck helps a lot. I also use PEAK filtered Water because I’m a
nerd.
When I’m out and about, it’s an Aeropress and a porlex for me. They fit together in a way that…
pleases me, and I’m going though about 500g of Wholebean a week at home, never mind when I treat myself to one in a coffee bar.
I’m pretty selective about what coffees I’m buying, and Ireland has two or three roasters I can rely on, none of whom are 3FE, so I buy a lot online or in one of the few specialty shops I frequent.
Onyx from Canada put out an coffee last year from Gare Ware Jilo, an Ethiopian single origin that was the
best coffee I had had in YEARS.
I’m VERY into coffee. Owned a coffee joint and all. I am what I considered a “professional”.
Any questions, ask me. I’m
not a barista, that’s an Italian word for barman and I don’t serve hooch anymore, but I am a guy who makes incredible coffee.
If you want to talk about coffee, I’m your dude, I love the stuff.
I’m worried it won’t be a sustainable business in the next five years but you know. Live while you can.

Intrigued by that Ethiopan coffee you mention... coffee from there is almost always my favourite, I like the mellowness and interesting depth of flavour that I tend to find in it. Give me a coffee that tastes like a bunch of flowers and I'm quite happy - I had a Chinese coffee (surprised this even existed) in a local place a while ago that really amped this up to a strange level but was very interesting and different.
I don't really know much about coffee but I like trying different things and I like (typically single origin - IDK if this is needed for this or just an indication someone has thought about what they're sourcing) stuff that's a bit different from "normal tasting coffee".

I pretty much only buy coffee from Swedish roasters. We have a whole bunch who do some brilliant stuff.
I gotta get on the aeropress train though.

Been enjoying mine a lot recently. I tend to cycle around different methods every now and then. Aeropress is the best thing I've got for making mellow and flavourful coffee.

You should try coffee from a vacuum pot.
Right, Adoom?

I don't have any experience with those coffee pads, but I think they're probably only slightly less hurtful ecologically than pods. (Sure, composting 'em'd help though.

)
If Missus Fission is looking for something more convenient in the way of brewin', there may be better options.

Vacuum pot looks very cool but I think it's a fiddly and fragile device I will do without

I'm sure you can find a coffee shop that serves vacuum pot coffee.

My problem with paper filters bursting open at the bottom seems to be fixed, by folding the bottom seam and (new development) folding the vertical seam too. The vertical fold apparently reinforces the bottom fold. Duh!

Excellent discovery!
I went out and bought some Lavazza rosso because I want feel like I'm in a shitty café in Italy.
