So I was recently thinking since Alex hasn't gotten to making my cab yet, should I upgrade my order from 2x12 to 4x12? I don't play in especially heavy bands right now, but I may want to in the future and also my buddy asked me to go try out as the second guitarist for this doom metal band Ikaray. So I dunno just a thought I guess.

I would. I have a 212 (orange, not science, but that's not really the point) and it totally holds it down in every situation I've come into, but I almost always wish it was a 412. Just that much fuller and richer. And they look cooler....

You can make a 4x12 quieter. There may be a point where you can't make a 2x12 louder. If you can deal with the space considerations seems like a no brainer to me.

Well I guess I'll shoot upwards for the 4x12 although when you say you can make it quieter what do you mean? I use to have a sunn 4x12 and quiet was not it's thing. Then again I was also using a 120 watt orange back that year. Now I just use a sovtek mig 50 and I still thinking about going lower wattage than that even though I know that doesn't technically mean quieter but just more compressed tone and dirt.

Either way, it's not going to be used at home so it won't really matter honestly. The problem is indeed space may be an issue if any of bands fall through and I need a new practice space haha.

The idea is the less speaker area of the 2x12 will prevent you from getting the air displacement that the cone area of a 4x12 will. SO in situations where your amp is cranked and the 2x12 isn't doing it the 4x12 could give you breathing room on your volume/master. However, you could put some highly sensitive speakers in there like V30s (1w =100dB) and get as loud or louder than a 4x12 with less efficient speakers (1w = 97.5dB) and that 3dB difference in speaker efficiency is the difference you hear between a 50 watt and 100 watt amp. Personally a 50 watt amp doesn't do it for me our of ANY speaker configuration, but I use only a 2x12 with for my Hellhawk, and I could gig with just that.

Interesting, I have been borrowing cabs for like the last two months as I didn't have one and the science is gonna be my first cab in like at least a year since I've been in an actual band. I love 100 watt amps, but the pain of having it is more than enough to keep me using a 50 watt amp the weight difference and the 4 vs 2 tubes to change and bias is so much easier and cheaper. Who knows, I just don't need a giant amount of output especially since I don't play in super loud bands.

Although I realize the difference in volume between a 2x12 and a 50 watt vs 100 is negligible and has more to do with how they push frequencies and such. I don't know I also want bigger inside my soul, but the reasonable side of me always says otherwise haha. I'm gonna upgrade it because I know I'm more likely to regret a 2x12 than a 4x12

Yeah my experience with a MIG-50 and 2x12. Plenty loud, not tons of oomph like you'd get from a 100 watt amp but it's definitely loud. Science allows for open back operation of their cabinets, that would get you a little more perceived volume with the room filling effect of an open back. I'd go reasonable, then if you need more cab or more amp. You can still do it. The worst would be to be stuck with unusably loud gear.

Hmm this makes me definitely confused. I definitely don't want to end up buying more cabs/amps, as I'm generally a one cab/one amp type guy. I'm gonna ask Alex about it, and see what he thinks about my predicament. I don't see myself rearranging all my gear for the use of a doom metal band since it's rare for me to be in anything crazy loud. What's your thought on doing a 100 watt amp with a 2x12?

Don't trip too much. You have a good setup planned, just the doom band thing is throwing a wrench in there because I don't see a 50 watt amp and 2x12 doing it for a downtuned Doom band. Unless you're getting PA support, but when does that happen?

I use a 100watt Hellhawk with my 2x12. It's the sound I want and it's really loud coz I use V30s. But I can't really push the master on my Hellhawk all that much coz I have no speaker headroom.

I think at worst, I will buy a super cheap shitty 4x12. I mean when you are doing doom, I don't care about tone as much as others after all to me it just needs to be loud and woofy. Your right, if you are using a 2x12 with a hellhawk then I really don't need to worry bout it. Maybe I can throw a 2x15 instead and just carry both to shows when I'm doing doom stuff.

Versatility and portability would be best for me logistically. I was tripping to much! it's just been a while since I have been overwhelmed by being actually wanted in bands with my meager skills.

Can't go wrong with a beater $250-$300 Marshall 1960 4x12. Your mids will be scooped to shit but it's a well built cab and pretty damn good at moving air.

I agree, that's why I have the setups that I do. I'm in that same boat, I haven't played in any bands for a while but I just got recruited to play bass in group that really wants me to be playing bass for them. It's music I wanna do but it's really weird to be all amped about it again since I'm not even a very good guitarist, let alone bassist. That being said, I'm probably going to gig out with my 400RB more than my Mother just coz it's lighter and equally versatile. But when I need to crush a stage with an 8x10 and all tube amp. The Mother will definitely be hauled out.
