I'm feeling you on the strat - my mustang's dissembled at the moment, so I'm using a late 80s squier for now and remembered that a strat is just not my sound. Why not put your Superchief in it?
Me too I call them junky because the parts I've used are all pretty cheap; basically knock-offs. I try to make them look semi-nice at least Also it's weird how I tend to like them more than my "nice" guitars.

Exactly what I did this morning! I gotta sort out a ton of grounding issues on it. Half tempted to rip out all the wiring other than the volume pot

Yaaaaas. It will be. I gotta figure out a serious way to mount the pickup though. I mounted it onto the face of the pickguard for now, but I had to crank the bridge height to make up for the pickup. I would rather have lower action, so I guess I'll end up routing the pickguard.

yeah, on my mustang I had to rout a bit of a shelf for the superchief to sit on to get it low enough too. Did you put it in the middle position?
skullservant wrote:Yep, only middle position is real.
When you routed the pickguard, did you have to route the width at all? Scared I will end up routing into the pickup holes in the pickguard
yeah, cause I went from a mustang pickup hole to a teisco goldfoil size then to the slightly larger superchief footprint. I've got it screwed directly into the body though, and I used a file to rout it so there wasn't as big of a chance to get it wrong.
Stripped the white strat of the strat pickups, routed out the bridge of the pickguard for the Nelson Super Chief, took out both tone controls. Was able to drop the bridge and the action significantly. The pickup still is a pretty great distance away from the strings though, so it sounds kind of low output. I haven't gotten to really test it other than seeing if it worked or not though. Going to throw something over the empty pickup routes and put a giant Maneki-neko sticker that I bought the other day over whatever I put down.
