Need a new fuzz

Post by Adelbatross »

I've pulled my board apart and starting from scratch and realized I'm missing a key ingredient, fuzz! Have a pollinator but that doesn't get much use these days, so will probably be sold to make way for something new.

There's so much out there that it's kinda hard to decide, I've been tossing up between the Four Eyes or TAFM. Want something that will stack well with my barbershop and fuck, love the way those two stack together with my RRR so want a fuzz I can throw in the mix. Thought if there's anywhere that could offer some ideas on fuzz it would be ILF.

imma vote tafm. So versatile. + dat clean blend really allows for you to change the flavour if you have dirt coming in already. And I am sure it would stack awesomely with a fuck. It'd have to.

Dunno how it stacks with your ODs, but I like the suneater. A lot. I'd check that out. It does stack nicely with stuff I have, but I keep mine first in the chain for oscillating reasons

I'll second Brandsmannen on the Suneater. Versatile, plays well with others, and covers a huge amount of ground using the volume knob on your guitar. Only caveat: it's awesome with my single coil guitars, but merely great with my humbucker guitars. Highly recommended!

Suneater!

Just so happens I have a Fuck, an RRR and a Suneater sitting around at home.

How do you set up your RRR and your Fuck? And do you do SC or HB pickups? Pedal order? Amp? Tell me everything and I'll demo it for ya!

An alternative to the TAFM would be a Blakemore Deus Ex. I have one and it makes me do happies.

I REALLY like my Four Eyes, but I don't think it'd be my go-to for a fuzzless board. I love it the most when the filter resonance switch is on 1 - it's definitely the tamest, but it's also the most useful. The fuzz isn't gnarly / weird at this point, more classic rocky in a way, or at least to my ears. When you start upping the resonance to 10 or 100, it gets much more into a cocked wah sound, reminds me a lot of my Stone Deaf PDF-1. You can do a LOT of really awesome shit with this pedal, but it's just way different than most fuzzes to my ears.

Haven't played a TAFM but the demo I just checked out sounded sick. The fuzz sounds chewier than the FE... and the filter knob seems to have much less of that really pronounced, narrow Q vibe. I'd go with that one. Now I want one. Fuck.

On the real I would totally play a The Cheat-ar.

Let me also chime in and say the Four Eyes is not the best choice for an all-around fuzz. It's a great addition to any board and does some really awesome sounds but it can't really achieve those super saturated fuzzy sounds you might want. Seems the Suneater or TAFM would cover more ground.

Four Eye is great... but have you look at the Unpleasant Surprise?
