I'm planning a trip to the big NY, and it's hard to figure out which store are definite go's and which are don't's.
Please come with any suggestions. I'm mostly interested in pedals that make the world a weirder place.
The list so far:
Sam Ash & Guitar Centre
Rogue Music
Armens
Main Drag Music
Three Wave Music
Control
30th Street Guitars
Ludlow Guitars
Rivington Guitars
Southside Guitars
Guitar Center
PG Music | pedalGEEK
Craigslist

Main Drag is probably the best for ILFers, and Ludlow is also great. I also like Rivington and Southside. The vintage room at 14th St. Guitar Center is like the ark of the covenant for old Fenders and Gibsons. Kinda fun just to go see that stuff. Brace yourself for NY prices. Although, coming from Europe it won't be that bad.
Also, craigslist in NY is awesome!

NYC sucks for gear and pretty much in general. Expect a limited if not nonexistent used selection and for everything to be overpriced. If you want something from GC, you'll do better going to NJ or Yonkers and haggling a bit. The independent stores aren't particularly service or economy minded - there are there waiting for you, the tourist, blinded by bright lights and bus fumes, wanting to be able to say "I bought this in New York", and they will charge you accordingly.
I know most here would disagree, but your best bet - Prymaxe. Figure out what you want ahead of time and have it shipped and waiting for you at your hotel. I'd rather see someone buy from an iffy dealer like Prymaxe than to put their money into the NY economy.

Heavily disagree about my hometown sucking, but our music stores do suck here if you want a good deal, I second just ordering from prymaxe, though ludlow and main drag do have quality gear selections if you wanna just play around
