I'm thinking two per category, maybe three if 2nd and 3rd place are really close.

I actually found the big mass of pictures a little hard to handle. My mind was blown after like four or five and I had to go back and forth between the voting and the pictures a couple of times. But I have the attention span of a fly and it is fairer to have everything in one place. So I guess that evens it out.PetZounds wrote:What has everyone thought of the competition thus far?
Does anyone have any complaints, suggestions, comments, compliments, etc?
Thank you to everyone who has participated so far!
I'm gonna let the polls run a couple more days, just so everyone will get a chance to vote.
Maybe you should put a definite deadline, last year there were still some votes trickling in, but once a decision about an end was made even the last slackers got to voting.

Yeah, the large number of pictures was my biggest concern.phantasmagorovich wrote:I actually found the big mass of pictures a little hard to handle. I'm sure there has to be a better way about it, but I don't know what.
There were so many entries, I would have had to have at least 7 voting threads if we used ILF's built-in polls.
I like not splitting up the categories, but like you said, the sheer volume is a bit difficult to manage.
That's a good point on the voting deadline, too.
In that case:
Voting ends Thursday, Feb. 5th!
Get to voting, dorks!

I definitely think so too.goroth wrote:I think you've done a stellar job Joseph.
Maybe when there are this many entries we could break down the categories into smaller groups and make it kind of a tournament style competition with quarter-final voting, semi-final voting, and final voting for each category

I've actually never owned a tuner.
Options
1. Mess around with the tuning machines 'til it sounds okay.
2. Tune after instrument of dude who owns a tuner.
3. Use an app on my phone. Not super accurate but it gets me there.
4. Use free space to add another fuzz.
The few times I have played shows I borrow a tuner from someone in possesion of one...like my mom.

My only criticism is that it would have been better to put the signal chain in the descriptions of the imgur photos. I didn't even look at signal chains cause I didn't want to cycle through 3 tabs (pics, voting poll, chains)

Pretty much this. If I couldn't tell the chain from the photo I just assumed it started at od/dist/fuzz and ended with reverb or delayChetMagongalo wrote:My only criticism is that it would have been better to put the signal chain in the descriptions of the imgur photos. I was going to do that, but some people had such long signal chains.UglyCasanova wrote:Pretty much this. I felt that having tons of text after each picture would be even more overwhelming for folks scrolling through.
I figured most people only look at signal chains for reference, so having a streamlined album of only images seemed the best way to make voting easier.

I have my venerable quartz needle tuner from the 80s.
And a bunch of the multis have them built in too so why buy a dedicated one?
I never liked the 'step on something and stare at a LED seven feet away' of pedal tuners though.

Re: ★★ Oh Damn: BILF 2015! (Voting ends Thursday!) ★★
I played with this dude who tuned to notes he had recorded on his computer. It's the only way his guitar sounded good, because the nut on his guitar was too tall (slots not cut deep enough), so his chords played out of tune, but in a very unreproducible, good way, with his special tuning. But there I was wondering why my open chords don't sound right.
But I have one of those sonic research strobe tuners, it's excellent. I do the intonation with it, too. Like, you don't realize, sometimes, how shitty you sounded until you actually get in tune.

For one of their tours, Animal Collective tuned to an out-of-tune piano (which they had tuned to a bunch of samples of an out-of-tune piano they'd used on an album).
Or something like that.
I'm not into them but I always thought that was really cool haha.
