I honestly don't know if I have weird taste, I'm not around "anime" people enough to know. My comment was mostly in reference to the fact that I find Harem stuff disagreeable on a mechanical level in regards to what I want out of a romance. I used to watch a lot of them but mostly avoid them now unless they are specifically recommended to me. I think it's a horribly artificial way of creating tension between characters and because the protagonist usually has to be generic enough that he can be something for all these different women they usually come off kind of samey with *insert tropey or gimmicky background here*. Also, because there ends up being quite a few female characters they also seem kind of shallow and designed to fill some particular niche which always makes me question why exactly I would ever care for them as "people". This is sometimes resolved by having only two women be the real competition for affection and have the rest be moe or fanservice fodder but that's annoying too. I really hate the whole idea that there should never be any sort of resolution regarding the romance ever because you the viewer are supposed to choose for yourself but I would much rather have some real drama and heartbreak. I want all the sappy shit and I want the jealousy and I want the characters getting rejected and heartbroken and have revelations about their feelings and why they need someone. All that really powerful shit that only works if you can empathise with a character properly and Harems are an inhertently safe and teenage focused mechanic. You don't want to be isolating the audience by hurting the feelings of some groups chosen waifu or whatever.
The lack of resolution thing is also a big problem I have with a lot of rom-com style stuff. The characters are so pure and innocent and it would take 15 volumes worth of the manga material to even admit they have feels for each other let alone date or lip bang and the show is only getting one twelve episode season so fuck you, you just have to take comfort in the fact that they will end up eventually. Probably. Ugh. I need closure.
Sorry for another text wall. I overthink these things too much
