The Doom Room: ILF Edition

just read this now...damn...that truly sucks, such a shame at such a young age. condolences go out to all his family and friends during the tought times.

and Conky, I can't imagine how hard your work is on a daily basis dude...you guys are the angels of the world.

The bad calls are few and far between (but still close enough to be considered too many) all of the non urgent bullshit we run. For every 20 calls we run 15 of them didn't need an ambulance at all in the first place, 3 could have waited until they saw their regular doctor the next day (or that day depending on how early the call is dispatched), 1 really needs to go to the ER but they refuse transport no matter how hard we try to convince them. That leaves the one remaining for bad shit like this. Big city, rural farm country... its all the same. Still, those bad calls never leave you.

Those on Facebook probably know but Athon from Black Tusk got in a motorcycle accident on Friday. Unfortunately, he passed away today. Awful. He was a really great person.

I had no idea. That's so sad. That guy was an incredible dude. The only time I ever met him he gave up a couple of days of his life and absolutely bent over backwards to help out a group of people who were total strangers. We were a couple of bands on tour and we broke down in savannah. He did everything he could to help us get the van running and when that didn't work, he and another black tusk dude used their van to drive the foreign band to their next show a few hours away while a few of the rest of us tracked down another van to finish the tour. Exceptionally awesome dudes who basically saved our tour. Went well beyond what most other people would have done. They casually just chalked it up to southern hospitality when we were talking about it and thanking them. But I'm from the south myself. I know and appreciate the hospitality, but this was still above and beyond that. Such a cool dude. What a loss. My thoughts are with his people. I'll certainly raise a glass to him.

I saw that on facebook and was immediately taken back. Too many lives have been lost these past couple months and especially too many to motorcycle accidents that could have been prevented. This is such a sad loss. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I have a morbid question: how much does a lack of airway access on a motorcyclist wearing a helmet impede you from doing what you need to do with potential C-spine injury? I've been thinking about that and don't know if there's a motorcycle helmet that combines full coverage and a removable mandible/facemask, one that minimizes facial injury in a crash, keeps the helmet on, but then also allows for easier airway access in case of a c-spine injury.

Thanks man. That means a lot. As far as helmets go. We're trained to remove them while still holding c-spine control. In some cases, it's easier to leave the helmet on. I have heard that there are helmets with removeable face masks but I haven't seen any. In most cases people just wear what we call a "brain bucket". It is exactly that too. The guy we picked up, when I took his helmet off there was brain matter in it coming from his left ear. Those things don't protect shit IMO. As far as intubating goes... If they're needing intubation and you compromise c-spine a little to get it then so be it. Won't do any good if you can't oxygenate them. I'd rather be alive and paralyzed than dead with c-spine held intact.

Yeah that's what I figured you'd say. And I agree 100%. Working with football and hockey helmets is way easier for it but I'm in the same boat, if you need airway access obviously do what you have to while maintaining c-spine stabilizing as best you can.

Was mostly just curious as that seems like something someone should continue to develop.
