How do you think I ended up with the AOR?odontophobia wrote:
I just prioritize other things and buy other amps...![]()
Anyway, just had a look under the hood. The Mullards turned out to be Xf1s....so while I'm happy about that I'm also suspect as to how in spec they could be. Plate voltage read 410v or so on both, could only get the bias up to a max of 33mA before the pot ran out of travel, so while they're still running cold, which concerns me, its a lot better than the 14mA they measured before I cranked it up, which explains a lot and hopefully hasn't damaged the OT.
The sockets are a little loose on the preamps as well. But I think they're maintaining contact to be considered OK until I can deal with them later. Replaced the Edicrons that were in there with Tung Sols, was particularly concerned about the PI, kept the Amperex red label and national in as they were in V1 and 3.
Checked the screen grids, they measured what was printed on them.
Didn't get a chance to play loud or for longer to see if any of that solved my problems, its late and the kids are asleep. I'm reluctant to push those mullards for too long though, so I might order some new tubes. Part of me is thinking maybe I should look at replacing the bias resistor before I do, but I'll wait on expert advice from one of you dudes before proceeding there.
The amp shows evidence that at some point someone has been in there messing around, but it still sounds good, so I'm happy on that front.
Thanks man, I think I'm getting to the bottom of it. I'm proceeding with more patience and caution this time. The Sovtek will live again though. I just need more time with it.samzadgan wrote:
fuck man, that sucks...I know you were really looking forward to getting that beast especially since your sovtek had so many issues. Hold in there though...you can probably get it fixed soon and it will be well worth it. Those AOR's are monster amps![]()
So after thinking that the Roland Cube was the be-all-end-all of home practice amps, I soon got over the functionality and wanted something that just sounded good...and the cube just wasn't it! Today, I did a deal on a Laney Cub12...real cheap...which i'm happy about. Should get it later in the week...mini doom machine...especially when I get my ritual and velcro it to the amp!
Good luck with the cub!
Yes. Domination.D-Day wrote:Despite my wild unchecked love for my favorite band, Fu Manchu, I have never been able to get into playing a Superfuzz. I've played lots of clones, a few vintage ones and I own a very nice clone made for me by a friend. They all just seem to kill any dynamics or variance in picking making every note/chord come across the same regardless of the emotion behind it. I like big loud ugly total domination fuzzes (just ask EH clientele or AW fans) but the Superfuzz just dominates so hard that it crushes even my ridiculous definition of 'nuance'.
And that amplifier sounds RADICAL Nick
Can't wait to get some time up my sleeve to get this AOR Blasted, Ape styles.
Also, what are these things you speak of? Dynamics? Variance?
The FZ2 is kinda like that, you're right. But I guess I dig it for playing those sort of rolling type Om riffs where it just builds a wall of towering fuzz. Creates a lot of movement, urgency I guess, maybe. Plus I find them really unforgiving if you fuck up. It stands out like dog's balls, so that makes me play better.
Also, SLK, that is one wizard pube amp there, dude.
You could definitely velcro some pedals to that.

HA! I had this half stack as my first half stack and man do these things.... well actually I don't remember HOW horrible but it wasn't great hahaha I always wanted to amass a collection of the 4x12's though. Thought it would be awesome to make a Sunn style shrine out of fuzzy fender cabs hahaShaolinLambKiller wrote:So while I was looking ebay I noticed i was issued my ebay bucks certificate.. I had 60 bucks worth. So I took that and bought this for 60 out of pocket.

Superfuzzs always had a mid cut to them and I never like it. I played a SS/BS modded Supefuzz circuit and it was bleh. Nothing against Brian at SS/BS I just never liked a Superfuzz.

Superfuzzes done right sound amazing on bass, never found one I gelled with on guitar though. It sounds brutal but has no clarity or like Darren said Dynamic. It's just full on all the time.

I actually feel the opposite -- I think Super Fuzz only sounds good on guitar.

I want every pedal on my board to be "Super <insert pedal type>"
But never tried a super fuzz...in most cases i prefer modern fuzz pedals, although are based on old circuits seem to have been improved...which is a good thing.

you guys are getting soft. superfuzz is king. if we were talking about the Companion which i also use i'd give you a break, but the Superfuzz? man, that's just a brilliant sound. i prefer the Companion on bass, but that obe is definitely not for everyone. i do like them fuzzy and trashy though. most modern fuzzes don't speak to me that much.

Well, I've been away a while. I've got that Fuzzpotion on Craigslist due to lack of mids. Some days I love it, some days I hate the shit outta it. Oh well.
Past couple days have been wonderful gear-wise. Did a bunch of pickup swapping and a couple setups for my boi yesterday and was paid a super cool modded DS-1 and an old Fender 215 with the OG Jensens.
And then this yesterday...

That sure is a fucking Louis Vuitton tolexed AOR.
