Post-rock.
so. for some odd reason i alwayz see ambient/drone/noise mentioned in teh same sentence but post-rock is alwayz mentioned separately. not to say that ambient/drone/noise haz to be mutually exclusive. but...
i like a lot of math rock & post-hardcore stuff. & i do think there is a LOT of common ground/overlap w/ ambient/drone/noise/math rock/post-hardcore/post-rock/space rock et cetera. i just think that now certain bands like Godspeed or Explosions in the Sky automatically...well...it's almost becoming a cliche:
my main gripe w/ this stuff is the delay/looper guitar parts. sometimes you can almost tell they're using a Gigadelay or something. that really kills it for me when i hear a really nice ambient or drone part & then that dang gum Boss delay guitar thing comes in i just hate that.
okay peace.

Re: Post-rock.
this guitar playing you speak of, do you mean like this?

I def. undrstand what you mean about post-rock bands being very stale though. Have you heard of Tera Melos? They're more of a math-rock band, but they have a lot of little post-rock/ambient parts in between songs and such.

I'm a HUGE Tera Melos fan!
Alot of what i play by myself is considered "Post-rock" and GY!BE is my favourite band
In reply to the "Stale" or "cliche" comment i don't think godspeed are, but definitely Explosions In The Sky and every other band that embraces the "Post-rock" tag, they all sound the exact same to me.

Re: Post-rock.
i don't really want to hate on Explosions in teh Sky. i saw them once on Austin City Limits & it was pretty good until they ended w/ some weird-ass emo ballet guitar swinging thing. & they did that two drummer--or one drummer one floor tom "percussionist" bit that i REALLY think is played out--thing. but other than that i thought they were okay.
i think i first heard about Explosions in teh Sky when Deerhunter got booted off the Smashing Pumpkins tour or whatever. it's just that teh lines becoming blurred when everything is Explosions inn the Sky or Sigur Rios or whatever. really i have no idea what i am talking about...

Mentions of math rock and post-rock? Both of those genres is what got me to start playing guitar!
I will never forgive myself for not seeing Slint live in 2007 while I was in Edinburgh and they were in Glasgow.

Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

Re: Post-rock.
Yeah the stuff that bites Explosions gets is super annoying, and the labels get a bit ambiguous at certain points. Godspeed's album have almost as much ambient music as rock and Sigur Ros has more in common with gaze than Explosions it seems so

I think "post-rock" has become a pretty broad genre in the last five years or so, i know some people casually refer to bands like battles and 65daysofstatic as post-rock and in some cases even bands like foals.

Agreed.
I like a lot of the "post-metal" stuff that's basically Neurosis in different forms. Minsk, Yakuza, and Cult of Luna. All have vocals and the post-rock aspect is just an aspect, but is more doom or sludge oriented. Neurosis's Through Silver and Blood is

The number one band I think of when I hear the term 'post rock' is Tortoise.
I really dig Tortoise...especially "TNT".
