Got back into playing bass seriously a year or so ago, so I now have these

83 Rick 4003, which is a nice aggressive machine


68 Telecaster


This has become my main bass though, although it's just a 90s MIJ Jazz with a set of CS60s. It sounds amazing


And I just bought this old thing. 62 P Bass


And I snagged this doghouse a couple of months ago, and it's a blast

It's a workout, but you get used to it pretty quick. I've been playing fretless too for a bit which helps (it's a Warmoth parts Jazz and I don't have any pics of it). The gigs sure start rolling in once people know you play standup

I just like perfection and the lack of fret markings scare me. It seems once the fingers hit the finger board your committed to that note. How do you accurately play them without fret markings? I listen to Charles Mingus playing the upright and he just blows my mind how awesome he is.

I played it for a couple of days with a chromatic tuner inline to keep an eye on intonation, and combined with your ear, you get used to finding where the notes are pretty quickly. Playing slide and fretless bass gtr has helped too. I'm still not great higher up the neck, but the lower notes are all there.
Try listening to Stanley Clarke playing upright -- it's amazing.

You get used to it is the answer. A lot of people learn by putting stickers on the lower end of the fingerboard for note positions, that can be helpful for getting used to the positioning, and slowly you do develop feel and an ear for it.

Fender Musicmaster Bass

Well, kind of.
The main new thing is the lipstick pickup. The idea came after seeing the new Fender Rascal bass with lipsticks. I'm liking the new tone. The brightness and low impedance makes it work well with pedals, can't wait to gig with it. Took a bit of MacGyver-ing to get the pickup to sit right. Now it works great though.

All it really needs is a heavier set of strings. Playing a half-step down makes the E a bit too loose. Wouldn't mind a new bridge with individually intonating saddles, but that's a long shot.

Speaking of the Rascal, I'm loving mine!

Very similar to my old Bass VI obviously with dimensions and feel being near identical minus two strings. Build quality, fit, finish, and hardware are all top notch, absolutely no complaints. Sets up perfectly, plays wonderfully, stays in tune, and the pickups/switching is super cool.

I prefer the lipstick pickups to the Jaguar-style used on the Bass VI honestly. They sound fuller and more well balanced. Plenty of thick low end punch and some really nice highs to boot and a total lack of mud in all settings. The bridge is present with a nice growl and things just get warmer and rounder as you head towards the neck pickup but clarity does not suffer. The combo (bridge + middle and neck + middles) positions are very unique, almost acoustic/piano like in quality. The push pull neck + bridge setting is pretty aggressive and the "all 3" setting is surprisingly mellow and smooth. Tons of versatility with this wiring scheme and they love all the fuzz/dirt I've tried thus far.

I prefer short scale basses so this feels right at home to me. Comes stock with a set of Fender strings gauged 45-65-80-100 and tension feels perfect in E standard. Plan to order some heavier strings eventually and tune down a 1/2 step.

My two. Equally loved, mostly because they sound completely different. Both equally cumbersome (neck-heavy and awkward) until I forget about it and play. The Casady can and will feedback at volume above normal convo levels, which is FUN. I might change the tbird to a Jbass, but thats in the far future.

I actually sold the Casady to fellow ILFer foomanfat. I'll miss that bass, so unique sounding and gorgeous to look at but I'm mainly a guitar player and def don't need two basses. The Rascal feels more familiar and is a little more sonically versatile so I decided to go with it instead. That said, the Casady covers a ton of ground with that single pickup and Varitone switching.
