Ridiculous Noisy/Out-there pedals

Post by Enoch-Fox »

So... I while back a friend of mine bought this old danelectro pedal called the Sitar Swami
it was a ridiculous combination of a little fuzz, a ring mod, and a phase effect that sounded almost, but not quite, entirely unlike a sitar.
It was an amazing piece of equipment for noise freakouts and weird creepy atmospherics but basically useless for any "musical" purpose as far as I know. The punk band we were in at the time made good use of it during noise-rock breakdowns... still haven't been able to get that particular flavor of deliciously harsh and grating. To this day I regret not buying that thing off of him.

Anyway... I was wondering if anyone else has stories like this? Pedals that aren't immediately useful for, say, writing songs, but as noise producers and general "what the fuck" generators are second to none?

The Geiger Counter could probably be both muscial and WTF at the same time. almost anything by mid-fi could fit the bill though.

Mid-Fi's entire line, as well as Copilot's, probably fit in that range. The DOD Gonkulator was distortion + ring mod. I've heard the Danelectro Psycho Flange is cool like that. The Ibanez Airplane Flanger does wacky stuff on the Take Off mode, kinda like Flanger + Whammy. The legendary Mode 7 on the Boss PS-3 is cool for that Delay + Pitch Shift thingy. Digitech Space Station obviously, but hella expensive to get one now. The entire Moogerfooger line is also good for crazy noise freak-outs

Red Panda Bitcrusher module!!!!

I had a Sitar Swami, too... I let it go, and kinda regret it sometimes... but not often enough to hunt one down on eBay.

Even after using Trogotronic, Noise Box, Copilot, AB-Synth, Moog, and other bizarre stuff, I still think that the weirdest is the HBE Frost Bite. That is the only pedal I've used where I seriously feared for the sacred virginity of my unblown speakers.

I edited this post a week later to correct an error because I'm anal as fuck!

EHX big box Q-tron. sure it can be used musically but it serves better paired with a delay for ambient feedback. No strumming needed.
