Hey, let's talk about "Classical" "music"

So, I've been getting into classical a lot these last few weeks.
Wagner, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Schoenberg.
I've been exposed to plenty of classical music, being in band in high school and shit. (played trombone )
Up until recently, though, I didn't really have any interest in going out of my way to listen to it.
But dang, some of it is so insane.
Just like with any genre, I guess.

I'm sure there's plenty of people on here who dig their fair share of classical.
So: tell us about how it makes you feeeel.
Share some pieces you like.
Or some you don't like, even.
I wouldn't mind some recommendations.

is my favourite classical album ever made. Really well done, fantastic selections and the recording is phenomenal.

I would heartily suggest reading The Rest Is Noise while delving into any classical, but if you're looking for "dissonant" type stuff this book will provide a fantastic primer on the evolution of 20th century classical as well as a historical context in which is was created. It's simply a fantastic read, I've read it 3-4 times at this point and every time I come out with more music to check out.

I am most partial to:

Schostakovich string quartets
Beethoven's late string quartets

I am a huge fan of Alban Berg - I cannot suggest this:



collection enough. Extremely well rounded collection and most of his essential stuff in one excellent package. I collect his opera sets too, I am a huge fan of Lulu and Wozzeck. I think I own 2-3 LP boxes of each. And hit up that Lyric Suite. Fucking brilliant.

Strauss is also hugely important. Salome & Elektra are both well worth your time.

I have also started going to the opera occasionally with my mother in law. So far we've seen Madame Butterfly, Tannhauser, and recently saw The Nose at the Live from the Met series. That was FUCKING AWESOME.

Seriously, Wagner wrote some cool shit but you ever sit through a 5 hour opera? wtf was Hitler thinking?

I've been really into Subotnick lately. I just bought the reissue of Silver Apples of the Moon and I'm prowling around the city like a crazed ape trying to find a reasonably priced copy of Until Spring. I fucking love how every record store prices every classical record at $3 and every Stockhausen and Xenakis LP is $40+....

Listened to Danse Macabre this morning. I definitely favor the darker stuff. Very accessible and interesting. Not sure if you're into that stuff but it is fun. I really like Tchaikovsky.

Debussy is so fucking good. To me it's like classical lite. I feel like if people in those times took ecstasy they'd be listening to those jams. Clair de Lune is blown out, but all his other stuff is pretty much top shelf. The Sunken Cathedral:

Brass is basically like, FUZZ for symphonies.

I really wanted to play cello or bass as a kiddo, but my school didn't have orchestra.
My dad also had a super old trombone from when he was a kid, so I got put on trombone because I had one.

My past few years in college has certainly improved my taste of classical. Still can't really stand anything before the classical period, and only late classical music at that. Romantic, 20th century, and modern day wind symphony pieces are the ones I go for.
