Small simple cheap analog or digital synths with midi?

Post by dorfmeister »

I really like the looks of this but it ain't exactly cheap.

I wonder if we can start a thread about simple, cheap analog or digital synths with midi so you can connect up a sequencer or midi keyboard. Inputs to allow processing of a guitar would be interesting but not necessary.

I am thinking of the Dave Smith products like the evolver but it would be nice to find some things even cheaper and with a more user friendly interface. Mopho seems to have that plus lower price but I've never seen/heard one in action.

MFB has some interesting stuff:

great thread. i'd love to have a desktop synth one day. i've been occasionally looking at the DSI Evolver on ebay & they've been going for fairly reasonable prices these dayz. i think it really boils down to what type of synths sounds you want. are you looking for analog or digital. et cetera.

i remember i saw a Red Panda demo a while back & it employed the Moroder patch on the Mopho & it sounded really good. i really like that about the Mopho. i'm not into analog synths or analog "modeling" per se. but i think the Mopho semes cool. i'd rather have that than the Alesis Micron.

anyway. i am checking demoon demos out now...

peace.

microkorg? does it have an input?

i had the evolver desktop once upon a time, but i knew basically nothing about synth programming and didnt understand how to make sounds at the time. nonetheless it sounded pretty fuckin awesome and had some dope sounds...with 2 analog and 2 digital osc's and tons of extra options u could rpolly make any sound u want with that thing....now that i'm a lil more versed in programming, i wish i had never sold it.

That is exactly the kind of thing I am talking about. Cheap. Has midi.

I have a DSI Mopho and it's a nice-sounding analog synth - especially with the sub oscillators. It has dedicated encoders for tweaking some parameters, but you have to use the included software for real editing. I bought it mainly for comparison while working on a software synth, so that doesn't bother me.

The Evolver looks like it is better for standalone editing, but not as good for quick tweaks. Both have audio inputs and sequencers. The Evolver has wavetable oscillators, highpass filters, distortion, delay, and feedback loops, making it better for processing guitar. It doesn't have a sub oscillator like the Mopho, though.
