If you are doing a simple job, like enlarging a pickup cavity, the routing attachment from stewmac for a dremmel works great. The trick is to go slow and only remove a bit at a time. It's not what I would recommend for large jobs or doing a bunch of guitars, but for the occaisional modification it's my go to tool.

Thanks! I put the locking trem on, it's a washburn wonderbar. It was on my aluminum kramer when I bought it but I didn't like it on that guitar. So I moved it to this one and it works great! It doesn't need routing which is nice.

The last thing to do, is rewire it so the rhythm circuit on/off becomes a Jag-style treble-bleed.

I traded a Squier Jaguar and some pedz for this: 2006 American Series Stratocaster. Shoreline Gold. Deluxe tremolo with the pop-in arm. Locking tuners. Drooooooool.

What color is that tele? It looks like purple sparkle (Like on the J Mascis Fender Jazzmaster) in the picture, but I have a feeling it's actually some sort of metallic red. Another question, how hard was routing out the guitar with a chisel? My friend is selling me an old strat copy and I'm considering putting the SD Antiquity humbucker I have laying around in the bridge position.

It's CAR. I dunno if I'd say that it's metallic, but the finish appears to have some small sparkly bits in it. It's just my shit webcam making it look purple tho.
And it wasn't too hard, but it was definitely time consuming. Using an actual router probably would have been better, but I don't own one. Route is a bit messy, but it came out okay considering. I'll see if my mom will let me use her camera so I can get you guys a better pic of it.

I used a router and almost fucked everything up. The body is hard ash and that's no joke. Ended up with a odd shaped hole. I figure next time I'm feeling ambitious, I'll go back in and make it bigger and square, so it doesn't look so amateur underneath the pickguard, and to give me the option to drop a full humbucker in the mid position.

ooh that looks nice. Never worked with a router or with an ash guitar. Only went with a chisel cus I don't own a router + I used to carve wood with chisels when I was 14 for fun, so I felt a bit safer with using one. And yeah, I'm thinking if I ever end up getting a different pickguard that I might open the hole up to accept a fullsize humbucker too. I'm pretty happy with the mini in it now tho, so I dunno.

NGD! I dropped by an old friend's house and picked up this old guitar.



It's a GTX Strat copy, probably from the 80s or something but I'm not sure. The neck profile is pretty sweet, quite different than a Fender neck. I also dig the color, it's a little bit brighter in person, but it's some sort of metallic teal/turquoise. It sounds pretty good, needs new strings though and it smells kinda funky. I like it overall. I plan on modding this or at least setting up for a Sonic Youth type tuning.

'83 Strat - I swapped some of the controls and covers to black, and put in a hot rails in the bridge.
Ibanez RG8 - stock, though I wouldn't mind trying new pickups.

because try as we might to ignore them, strats are fucking awesome and super comfortable…
