Edit: Ooh I dig the Warmjet. The clips I've watched make the attack seem a little sluggish though? Almost sounds octave down... Could just be the guitar though Also, the Basic Audio stuff has given me something to think about

superfuzz and variants

That would've been my suggestion, if the OP didn't already mension he's not completely satisfied with his FZ-2

Anyway, there's obviously a billion pedals we could suggest here, and I'm sure this'll end up being a 19 page thread full of different pedal recommendations:)

Don't know how familiar you are with the fuzz factory, but there's a couple of things you keep reading online, that are absolutely true:

-It's finnicky.
-Not a helluva lot of 'musical' settings that'll cut through the mix and won't feedback or squeel like a motherfucker.
-It's finnicky.
-It's pricey for what you get. When it first came out it was kinda sorta groundbreaking I guess. But now the boutique pedal world has caught on, and there's plenty of more affordable alternatives that do a smiliar job, and even addresses the above issues.

One of those alterantives that's worked for me so far: Red Witch Fuzz God II. More manageable, but it'll still osscilate or throb or whatever if you want it to. Dialingin in more classic tones is easier than on the ff, and it's more versatile and user friendly thanks to the second footswitch.

I just received a Dr Scientist the elements btw (Thanks Ryan!). Arguably a pure fuzz pedal, but you might as well concider that a good thing. Tweakable thanks to the clipping options and eq controls, so I'd expect it to work nicely with any amp or guitar, and be capable of handling a pretty wide range of styles and tones.

I have a One-knob fuzz clone that I like a whole lot.

consider:
- a silicon Fuzz Face
- a clone or variant of a 1960s 3-tranny Tonebender - either mk 2 or mk3/mk4.
- a clone or variant of a 1960s two-tranny Tonebender - either mk'1.5' or the V828 Italian-made one.

If you're considering the price of a Fuzz Factory (handpainted version), then look into a new Deep Trip Kryptone.

Jordon bosstone clone of some sort. Nice lingering sustain like the muff, bluring into a nice feedback at high gain. Doesn't sound like a muff. Has a sound all of its own. Can sometimes get trashy depending on pickups and input signal. Awesome for 60s garage rock.

Bee Baa really is a lot like a Superfuzz without any of the things I hate about Superfuzzes.

I decided to stick with the FZ-2 for now. After trying some other stuff I realized the low end on that pedal is just too real to give up. But I'm going to add an Elements to the mix and see what I can find with the mix knob

That said, I still really want to try all the pedals suggested here
