Just to echo what's already been said some of my favorite delays were dirt cheap sub $150 echo boxes. So, don't be afraid to buy and try till you find something that works for you. I'm personally a huge fan of the Artec "analog" delay, and the MUZA FD900 ambience generator. They're both so cold and spacey sounding
Seriously check out the DMM, I have the 550 tap tempo version and it is great! I think about selling it sometimes, but then I play with it for a while and it always floors me: it's so versatile, sounds damn good, and that tap divide feature is much more useful than you think. When I bought it all I cared about was the DMM sound, footswitcheable oscillation, adjustable modulation, and the effects loop. That tap tempo feature has become one of the handiest things about it! If it had a simple/optional pre-reverb, a tone control, tap-tempo out/in, and trails it would be the perfect delay box.
I just picked up an Empress Superdelay (original one) and I fucking love it. Probably the best delay pedal I have ever owned. I recently sold my Timefactor to fund it and I do not regret it one bit. The Timefactor sounded great, but Eventide and other such manufacturers tend to throw in a bunch of bullshit that really doesn't have a lot of application, and just tends to muck up the interface. Point being, the Superdelay sounds incredible and has a very user-friendly, simple, and aesthetically pleasing UI. Worth every bit of the high price tag.

when im playin it tends to get real noisy and chaotic
and i can always find somethin in the dlab that cuts through
or just switch to the ambient settings and get that glow
i do yearn for somethin simpler at times
i feel like i got to flip through settings to find somethin that works
and if i just had full control over the 2 channels
id get where i wanted to be (timefactor)
just cant hack that price so i make do
the one i shoulda never got rid of was the ad9

i opened it up to set the trimpot back to factory
totally forgot how good of a simple delay it was for me
I like the theory of "any delay style you could want in one box" and the digital promise to make it happen.
It just never happens for me in practice, getting close yet so far from the sound and feel I want.
I prefer a specialized tool that does 1 thing well, and excels at inspiring me to be creative as a user looking to expand upon that foundation; finding versatility or unorthodox applications when getting hands-on, but not to the extreme that becomes the trap of excessive, aimless tweaking.
The DMM I grabbed in 2012 sounds consistently more interesting as a delay option in my rig...outshining all challengers.
Since getting it, 9 of 10 delays have been bought and sold in a quest for both compliments and a substitute.
Now only a Mtl Asm Jaywalking remains, because it too is an instrument unto itself...and while both are simple delays, they are different through and through.
I'll continue trying new options, but dont see myself parting with [these 2] to do so...even after finding new flavors that work for me.
Delay is one of those effects that needs to be explored, revisited, approached from different angles and so on.

What's special about the Jaywalking? I have a friend that's GASing for one but all I see is that it has an effects loop for the delays, which a few other delays have, right? I'm sure it's awesome and high quality because all mtlasm stuff is, just wondering if there's anything else going on with it?

Jaywalking has an expression pedal control linked to the delay time, allowing for pitch shifting applications...and the feedback loop recycles the repeats for interesting transformative effects; it's not just an effects loop. Just putting an EQ in it can lead to some really cool textures, especially with the expression pedal pitch shifting to find the resonant frequencies. Probably the most interesting 3 knob delay I've used. Plus I basically got it for $80...and it is the coolest color blue.
I just sold my Superego to fund a vintage fuzz purchase, knowing full well I can easily get another...which I will...because the Jaywalking inside the Superego's fx loop is prime for manipulating sampled/held synth pads and loops. Fun times.
Still not clicking with my delaylab. I'm gonna sell it. It just doesn't mesh with me. I can use my DD7 and I might buy a Flashback 4x or a cool analog and a ditto. Whatever.

Few months back scored a Diamond Memory Ln Jr, which made finally realize
the Timefactor that I could never bond with was ready to leave. Funny
though cause I still kept DD5. They work well together live.
