DIY challenge!

Post by Ben79 »

It would be this....

Take 1 old radio and turn it into a pedal using as few additional components as possible. Photograph before/during/after and if possible, record the results. Winner as voted for by the community. Prize: maximum respect and a lifetime supply of positive karma.

Who's in/terested?

Old = any radio made before the current moment, preferably something that's either salvaged or bought for very little.

I'm for it. I just pulled apart a couple different portable stereo thingies. Would I still be eligible if I can't show a pic of the fully intact original?

Aww.. if only I had more time. I'd be sooo keen. I've got a old valve radio I've been meaning to turn into an amp with some built in FX. Might post in this thread in a year or a few years time. ;)

Check my lil vintage radio amp (at the end of the thread .. with some sound samples) is this what you are talking about?

To convert an old radio into an effect, what are we supposed to do with the amp section.. should it be bypassed or..? a complete preamp/amp is eligible?

I built an other one using an old Westinghouse radio

those are just cool :thumb: the smallest tube amp I ever own. All components are really compact inside, I re-used the tube sockets on the small original pcb, cut some traces..

The idea is to create an effect rather than an amp. And let's face it, it's probably gonna be a fuzz. A valve radio could be turned into a valve booster or overdriver or I guess if you're really handy a tremolo or reverb. Anything goes though really - it's just for fun! Personally I get a kick out of buying an old non-working germanium radio for a few quid and seeing what I can do with the guts - a true vintage pedal for the cost of a vintage footswitch!
