Not gonna lie I listened to a few songs by Godsmack, SOAD, Trivium (Ascendancy was actually good god damnit) and Slipknot in high school to get fired up for sport

System of a Down is still one of my favourite bands to this day. Ascendancy was a great modern thrashy album. Slipknot are awesome. They've made some shit, but they've made some great tunes, too.

This. If you were into 'heavy' music at my high school you were into shit like Slipknot. I actually tried listening to a lot of the numetal shit I liked in high school and its just so silly. One of the rock radio stations around here plays 'modern rock' that all sounds like numetal with solos. It's all pretty terrible. I guess that makes it post numetal, AMIRIGHT

I was into numetal when I was in middle school, since I thought it was the heaviest music around. Then the summer before I was a freshman I discovered death metal and pretty much dropped slipknot and all associated bands.
I started playing bass because of the post-hardcore bands in my area though.

if you were in Bay City back then our paths must have crossed. What bands?

They're a technically accomplished band with a defined image, aggressive stage presence, and lyrics to make every angry teenager nod his head in agreement and satisfaction. What's not to understand?

I agree with all your points except that they're technically accomplished. At least when they first came out their riffs were all like

0---0---3----0---3----0

etc

I understand they have added guitar solos since then but I don't have the will to sit down and listen to their material.

Sounds like high school and just post graduation before moving to Grand Rapids, for me. Weird to think that was 10-12 years ago.

All of those shows out at Jamestowne Hall and Eastland and whatever they used to call the upstairs at Washington Lanes. And any show in Kurt's basement out in Saginaw... if you ever made it out there.

Yeah, sure, as far as guitar riffs go they weren't that technically accomplished, but in other areas they were. The drumming is quite intricate, but it's the layering and structuring that throws off a lot of musicians when they're trying to cover their material. It doesn't flow like other music does. You really have to be on your A-game to get it all tight.

Also, Nu Metal, just like any other genre, has some shit that doesn't suck and a LOT that does....no need to hate on the genre, just hate on the shitty bands.

Nope, I'm one of those who hates the smell as well.

I was already listening to death metal when the whole nu metal thing started up, I got some cds to try out and it was all like... well all this I'm already listening to is better.

As far as slipknot it was one of those obviously they are writing for a certain demographic and that's what they set out to do. I came across some video of both the guitarists of slipknot. separately playing and not in masks and not playing slipknot songs. I was actually pretty impressed. I knew they had some skill I just wasn't aware to what degree.

Don't mistake this for a defense of Slipknot. The guitarists are both solid players though. Kind of like how Wes Borland and Jon 5 can play their asses off but ended up in bands that horribly underutilized them.
