Bohren & dCoG is a good gateway. I'd take a look at New Zion Trio as well: it's jazz-reggae, so it's got some of the right repetition and tempo bits happening, but it's still a jazz piano trio. (And NZT leader Jamie Saft is a big-time metalhead.)

(Ditto Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin, various blues players, Van Halen, Metallica, etc.) Sleep is just not interesting to me at all, nor is anything that those players have done post-Sleep. Actually, about 90% of the music that gets recommended here doesn't excite me. I am a picky picky bitch. (And to be fair, you guys do better than the sevenstring.org crowd, largely because I have no interest in even *trying* to listen to most prog-metal or tech-death. Or any type of death metal, generally.)
I have such a boner for every classic artist you listed and pretty much everything the Sleep dudes have ever done that this whole post is driving me Cthulu levels of insane

Well, y'know, tastes vary. Far be it from me to say that *no one* should listen to those artists. I just don't often choose to.
...yeah, I'm that guy that "likes doom" but doesn't smoke weed and is "meh" about your favorite bands. There's always one....

...back in 2010, a solid 3-4 years after the genre was dead and buried.

I used to post as a guest on HellRide and lurk for their MP3's. My wizard staff is longer than yours.

HOLY SHIT THE MP3 SECTION IS STILL UP
