It's been going 3 years, if I posted every album/tune I listened to in that time i'd be on 2000 pages alone.

Just like lube, use sparingly... unless you're in to anal.

the thread is "what are you listening to right now?"

i think someone else said it better earlier....hate the game, not the player.

i think someone said it EVEN BETTER earlier - DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE

Can't agree more... I used to come here to discover new music from different people and to find out what other people listen to. Now it's mostly about you. Please stop and give space to other people

I met a guy a few years back that bought some stuff from me on criagslist. He had an amazing collection of gear, 40+ guitars, and various other collectables. He asked me to hang out for awhile, so I did. I sat and played his very nice guitars through his very nice amps while he went on about his collection, pulling things out to show me and brag about what he owned while simultaneously making wise cracks about me, music I like, and random shit. I figure hes just excited to meet someone to show his stuff to and maybe make a friend. I went back three times, each time he pulled out various collectables while I played his shit. Everytime, id ask him to jam, he'd refuse. One day I pop by randomly to catch him playing. He was awful. Its like he spent more effort to acquire gear than to learn to actually use it. Hes embarrassed and I say "naw dude its whatever! Lets play, I bet well come up with something cool" He refuses and starts pulling items from his collection again. I left an hour later and never went back.

Its not completely relevant but all this UG stuff reminded me of that guy.

No one has any reason to listen to Neil Young when Dinosaur Jr. cds are cheap and plentiful.

I watched a little bit of a Bad Company live performance on Cable TV. I'm not talking old footage. It was recent footage and it was terrible. Like a leathery train wreck of washed up dad rock. One of these deals where they looked the part,...but you could tell that they were just going through the motions.

Still love Sonic Youth, even though Kim's voice was pretty shite. But her little mumbly bit on Titanium Expose is kinda foxy. But yeah, they can seem pretty douchey sometimes. Although, I think Thurston and Kim's kid needs to have her mouth stapled shut. She seems like a twat.

This isn't the "impossible lies" thread.

dase wrote:I can listen to Sonic Youth anymore without thinking Thurston's kind of a douche and it spoiling the experience.

I do struggle with this, though. And I worshiped Sonic Youth's whole disconnected, seen-it-all interview aesthetic when I was younger. For whatever reason they came across as "the coolest people ever," but now that I'm not really worried about not being cool for showing excitement or enthusiasm it strikes me as really affected and disingenuous.

Do yourself a favor and never watch the Nardwuar interview.

Already seen both of them.

I've spent a lot of money on CD's and DVD's throughout my life, thousands of Euro worth, but I just don't buy CD's like I used to. I really miss it, but I've become addicted to instantly getting what I want online. If everyone was on bandcamp then I'd be using torrents less. Fortunately a lot of the good Sludge bands I like all use bandcamp.

Does anyone else feel this: Because you've spent thousands on music, films, books, comics, posters, art, etc. over the years, does this allow you to illegally source what you don't buy? Are you qualified to download a certain amount, morally speaking, because you've already invested in the artists and creators? I keep saying it is justifiable, but I might just be lying to myself and bullshitting myself.

I don't intend for this to turn into a huge debate on the morality of downloading, but I never would have found some of my favourite bands or spent any money on them if I hadn't downloaded their catalogue first. For instance, I've seen WHY? now twice in Dublin and have spent hundreds on them. I never would have gone to their shows or invested in them if I hadn't downloaded their albums. They would have simply been another band in my Amazon wishlist waiting to hear the click the 'Add to Cart' button. The same goes for Two Gallants. Going to see them live was a beautiful experience that I never thought would happen, and I buy any new releases from them (but I still have to download it because my disc drive is broke and I can't rip it onto my computer or mp3 player), but I used a torrenting site to first download their first couple of records. Does this also justify downloading illegally? I think it does. We as humans and consumers just have to keep a check on it.

Absolutely not. People who don't pay for music are assholes. Or Libertarians. Which makes them assholes.

Now, there's nothing wrong with giving music away, and there's nothing wrong with, say, downloading an album that you've already bought owing to technological constraints, but until music is produced at no cost to the creator there's no ethical reason why the consumer should dictate that it be available for free.

Plus, when almost all of the music you might ever want to sample is up on bandcamp/youtube/etc., the whole idea of downloading it for free is silly.

Sucks to hear about your computer - conveniently, Bandcamp just released an app for IOS & Android that allows users to stream anything they've purchased on their mobile devices. Doesn't quite do the "replace my whole library" thing, but it's kind of a sidestep around your moral dilemma. I downloaded the Android version this morning, but haven't had the chance to mess around with it much yet.

Whenever I install things I "view details" and watch the file names as though I know what any of them are.

I should probably stop playing "how many beers can I have while getting people to meet me with cheap pedlols off CL and still go to work the next day"...

Also I should probably stop freaking out when people bring me grimy, grungy audio gear to get fixed... Keep it clean folks...
