Silversun Pickups (vs. you know who)

Post by sev »

Oh my god do I love the newest Silversun Pickups record (Swoon). It has grown on me more and more and more since it came out.
I can't stop listening to it.

Whenever I say that, some wise ass who has never listened to either of their albums in their entirety has to accuse them of being merely a Smashing Pumpkins ripoff.

A) Yes, they have been influenced by SP, but I would never confuse the two if you put on one of their albums. They each clearly have their own sound and traits.

B) If you have to compare....I would say that both Silversun Pickups records are better than anything the Pumpkins have done since MCIS.

Ok, you can yell at me now.

i think they are for sure better than post machina ii and pre MCIS pumpkins. and yes, they have their own traights, but they certainly dont try to play down their sp influences either

There's a recent interview of D'arcy out there where she comments on how SSPU sounds nothing like SP.

This situation can be remedied by comparing SP to a certain early 90's band. :p

yeah, Sev, clearly you are not alone in expressing your admiration for SSPU's.... i do find myself in situations where people want to be a part of a conversation by merely debating without having facts (isn't 99% of politics and religion based on this??) and of multiple "knock off" conversations this one always seems to crop up.... i listen to music all the time and find similarities... i cannot watch a single Tarantino film without recognizing something "ripped off" which usually is just his way of paying respect to those who influence him.... we all know that Brian Aubert listened to them growing up, just like i listen to the Black Keys and pretty much rip off Dan Auerbach's style in certain moments in my playing.... and i do the same with SSPU (for a good three months my entire pedalboard was a replica of his i saw in a photo once AND i played an Epiphone Sheraton)....

I have moments where I catch myself sounding exactly like my father..... go figure....

if it's good it inspires you....

Dead serious.
Better than anything they've done in a decade......but not better than Gish and Siamese Dream.

Well, i miss the hard parts and aggressivity of the pumpkins in this band, but in the other hand, i love all that shoegaze dreamy melody parts ^__^
