Peavey Butcher/VTM

Post by John Matrix »

I've been thinking of getting one of these, but I'm not sure which one. I've read on some forums that they are basically the same except for the dip-switches on the VTM. I'm looking for something that provides big tube roar but also can get some cheesy 80's metal lead tones.

What say you?

My bud just picked up a VTM. I always imagined them to be a little git gainier compared to the Butcher, which, from what I've heard is super loud and super heavy. What's the power rating on the Butcher? That will be one indicator of clean headroom/volume.

i prefer the vtm to the butcher. both are great amps for the price. vtm 120 is hard to beat for how cheap they are. they take pedals pretty well. dirt on the amp is pretty alright too if you don't really need a clean. the vtm always seemed to have more gain available. try to play before you buy if you can. i've played some that didn't sound near as good as others. i think they can be sensitive to what tubes you've got in there too.

I have a Butcher. Had a VTM. Both are great and you really can't go wrong with either.

I've had both and I think I preferred the tone of the VTM. The stock basic sound without any of the dip switches is identical to the Butcher, but when you start fiddling with the dip switches there are so many sounds available and almost all of them are good.

you know that bit in the intro to 'like weeds' by His Hero is gone where it's like some sort of reverse reverb thing into a huge half time riff that sounds like a baseball bat hitting a cop in the face, repeatedly? That's what VTM120s sound like. Get a VTM120.

Brilliant description, by the way.
Parker may be able to chime in, but I'm pretty sure they didn't use pedals. Unfortunately missed seeing them due to shitty circumstances on every trip they made to the west coast.

It's true. No pedals. They just ran straight into vtm 120's. They are about the perfect example of those amps at their finest.

When I was testing out the Matamp cab I bought I used a Ultra 120 which I'm not sure how related to the VTM / Butcher it is but it was awesome (just didn't have enough bass for me). I cranked the gain to max and cranked it up, a minute later a kid walked over and asked what pedal I was using... I loved telling him "I'm not ;) " and told him that the old peaveys might not look the coolest but sound absolutely killer, he was blown away.

The Ultra is closer in relationship to the 5150 stuff than the VTM120/Butcher. Still an awesome sounding amp though. Also, Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden is a great example of the VTM120.

Ahhhhh that makes alot more sense, cause it sounded more like a 5150 with a leash on it (i.e. a master volume).
