Finally got a proper setup for this guy. One of the volume pots and the output jack needed replacing. Had it set up for DADGAD. It's been lying dormant in my basement for the last 5 years or so.

How would this sonically compare to, say, a Rickenbacker with their fancy humbuckers?

the filtertron knockoffs are pretty sweet. It gets most of the tele character but comes with some bottom end. Really likes the dirt for a tele. Plus it was marked down a couple hundred so I should be able to put a real set of filtertrons in it in the near future :thumb:

Thanks, guys. I'm really happy with it. :) I do think I will be putting some real filtertrons in it, as with the other mid range fenders I've bought the pickups are good, butthere is definitely some room for improvement.

I've never tried a Ric, so I can't properly compare them, but I tried it out against my other tele today and I would say it really is more 'jangly' than the standard tele. The twang is a little subdued by the pickups, it's definitely still there, but it could be described as a bit more jangly. Still it very much sounds like a tele, just with a bit more body, not quite as harsh.

I think I prefer my other tele for the clean/low gain sounds, but the Cabronita really excels with fuzz. The standard tele is a bit harsh and lacking in body when you throw some heavy fuzz at it, but the Cabronita just eats it up. Still get all the clarity and dynamics, but less harsh and with way less noise.

Also, I think it's time for a family photo:

There is one guitar missing, Must be at my parents house still. It's an old vantage VA-800 I think from 1980 that I found at a pawn shop a few years back. So I'll throw this image in that I stole from the interweb of the same guitar

edit: Sultan, I dunno what that guitar is, but damn it looks fine! Bet it sounds great, too.

Quick shot after restring her today. First string change since I picked it up at the end of the summer. Still trying to find my tuning. Currently C#G#G#BF#C#.

Silvertone 1319, late 1940s. Everybody in the steel community seems to splooge over the string thru pickups - me, I prefer the P13. Rich dark clean sound, scorched fucking earth with dirt.

Looks awesome, doommeow. What kind of music are you playing with a tuning like that?

Still trying to figure that out. I took a fairly long hiatus from playing, former jazz bassist turned noisenik, only started to get back into it a few months back.

The lap steel, when I let it, is an easy stress reliever - I really don't know what I'm doing, but that's a good thing, putting aside all formality and pretension, just sitting down seeing what happens. Without pushing it in any particular direction, the lap lends itself to HEAVY blues and spirituals, the current tuning sounds like early SY, and the weight of the bridge and the bar translate into endless sustain. So I'm writing/playing around with that - working on texture, letting notes ring and clash against each other, playing with repetition as basic structure.

Nice, thanks. I haven't played lap steel in a while, I think I need to pull mine out and start playing with it. (TWSS)

No, but I'm getting there. Just got a deal on an iRig HD... Embarrassment will ensue in the new year. :picard:

I've got to say that whenever you think I've set myself up for a TWSS joke, I'VE SET MYSELF UP FOR A TWSS JOKE.

This's the first and last time I'll say it. Be warned.
