mah noo song

Post by jrmy »

Well, one of 'em.

So here's the deal. For the past who knows how many years, I've been accumulating songs that I've written that I or my bandmates have felt didn't fit with the repertoire of whatever band I've been in. A few years back, I got GarageBand, and started recording those songs on my own. Now I'm at a point where I have a critical mass of toonz that have evolved far enough that I'd want to do something with 'em. I don't know what, precisely, but... something.

Of course, these songs all have two things in common: no vocals (well, a couple have vox), and Garageband drums. I want to get over myself and write lyrics / record vocals, but so far haven't had a decent setup for recording them... I plan on taking care of that soon. And I've been thinking that I'll talk to my bandmate and seeing if he'd be down with playing drums... of course, first I have to explain that I haven't been "holding out" on him, and hope that he'll be cool with me having 14 new songs, most of which he's never heard before.

Hmmm.

Anyhow, I'm pretty happy with how this one's turning out, drums and lack of vox aside. It came about from me messing around with my Flanger Hoax one day, and finding some fairly subtle settings... to me, it sounds like I'm riding the whammy bar, or the record's just gone slightly warped. All of the guitars are FHXed, except for one in the intro that went through my Red Panda for a little noise texture.

Anyhow, that's my story for the moment.

Many amounts of brilliance in this. What was your setup for guitar and bass?

Aw, thanks guys! I always have a moment of trepidation when I upload something of my own, so it's nice to know when they're appreciated.

Blurillaz - all of the gtrs went through my Flanger Hoax on various settings that I really should have written down ( ) into my Line 6 on a pretty neutral setting, and then into my computer. They were then tweaked with various amp sims in GarageBand. The bass was all recorded direct through the Line 6 on the same setting as the guitars, and then tweaked in GB. It's funny - I had developed an odd & annoying buzz in my bass tonez, but didn't notice until everything was recorded. Rather than rerecord it, I decided to fix it with EQ (usually a baaaaaaaad idea), and ended up with a bass tone that I really like, but would never have stumbled upon otherwise.

Oh, and in the intro, I recorded one track of my bass way up high through my Red Panda, to balance out the super-trebly FHX guitars and add a little glitchiness.
