fillin knob holes

Post by Greenfuz »

so I got one of these babies, and I wanna fill the holes and flip it over for lefty playing

what do you suggest to use to fill the holes? I've heard that over time you can get little seams where you filled holes, any certain way to fill them so that won't happen?

Wooden dowels?

That's what she uses.

I've never filled holes on pedals but when I used to restore arcade games I used Bondo (auto body filler) to fill in button holes in the metal control panels. Works great and dries super fast.

if you don't want to use filler, you can get metal covers with spring tabs on the back of the sort they use to plug holes in electrical junction boxes. there are specific National/Supro neck bolt hole covers of this nature which show up on eBay sometimes.

Yeah, you can get plastic plugs at the hardware store or even wooden dowels, just get the right diameter and cut the dowels to length.

they sell precut wood plugs
Image
the fancier the woodworking store
the more wood choices theyll have
or you can order them online im sure
another option is a plug cutter
Image
same idea but you cut your own
and if theres a space under your pickguard
thats not routed with a bit of meat
go for it(or dont, that could be disasterous
and itll match perfect
i use these things fairly often
and if you have a few to choose from
you can match the grain pretty well
and theyre tapered
so most of the glue stays below the surface
a dowel might give you a ring
unless you taper that a bit
but then you have the same idea goin
and if you line the grain up itll never split on you
other material doesnt expand and contract like wood
and then theres always these

its a lot nicer with a drill press
but if your only doin a couple its ok
also either have a big scrap of wood
or really tight clamp
clamp either way
but dont try to hold a 2inch scrap of 1x4
and try to use tha thing first time
knuckle buster for sure
turns it into a propeller
heres all species of plugs and cutters

dowels... for a knob hole?

....

just pop some masking tape over the bottom of the hole and fill with epoxy, sand it smooth and paint over it.
