Project: Klone fix

Post by oldangelmidnight »

I acquired a second-hand Klone and immediately upon receipt fried it by powering it with 12 volts of stupid. I don't know if it just needs new chips or something more. I don't see anything wrong but it sure smells like electrical death. It's on a BYOC board and it's a nice build.

Anyone willing to take a look and make a repair?

12 volts shouldn't have done squat, right? Unless maybe Klons already have a charge pump all up in them.

Ohhh, just googled and yes there is a charge pump. Probably you've only fried the electrolytic caps in it, which is an easy and cheap repair. Maybe you fried the opamps (are they TL072? I think they can get fried pretty easy), which is an easy and moderately cheap repair.

Could be you've fried the voltage doubler's IC, which might be a bit more expensive.

Mouser electronics can get you all of them things. Here're the parts you need, from an internet schematic. Maybe it's even right.

CAPS!
C10 1uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C2 4.7uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C9 1uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C15 4.7uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C16 1uf 35V Tantalum (polarized)
C17 47uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C18 47uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C19 4.7uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C20 1uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C21 1uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)
C22 1uf 25V Electrolytic (polarized)

OPAMPS
2 x TL072 (or JRC4558, etc.)

CHARGE PUMP
ICL7660SCPA/TC1044SCPA "charge pump" IC chip. (I'd be careful about this: I don't know if those two chips are interchangeable. Original Schem saith ICL7660SCPA)

I'd start by replacing the electrolytics. If that doesn't work, worry about replacing the ICs. Good luck!

Thanks for that.
I haven't got the skills or time for it.
I do have a bit of money and surplus gear for trade, though, if someone can do it.

I would bet you fried the charge pump. If it's a maxx whatever the number is those things really can't handle anything over 9v
