i have a repertoire that i run through whenever i test a new instrument, usually guitars. first i hit three or four cowboy chords and see what the pickups/resonance sounds like. often a G chord is enough to send it back to the rack. if i get past the cowboy chords then i run through a series of different styles of playing: some bluegrass/Bakersfield country stuff on the bass strings, some Stephen Stills blues licks on the 7th/9th fret, some chords up the neck with open strings ringing through them, a couple of power chords, a bit of octavey jazz stuff with some densely voiced chords to see if the chords turn to mud, and then some passages from the songs i've written/am working on.

I do shit like that....for bass I play Cannibal by scratch acid.
Guitar, sabbath riffs and like you said, some octave jazzy open chords up and down the neck.
for amps, I love doing the chug riff of Seasick by the Jesus Lizard.

God, i'm getting to hate living in Chicago. the weather is insane, and other than the lakefront it's a fucking UGLY city except for a few lovely buildings put up in the Louis Sullivan/Holabird and Root/Fran Lloyd Wright era around the turn of the 20th century. plus i can't afford to fucking do anything because i'm penniless. and i still can't find any work. i'm becoming tempted by the Snips theory of Too Many Benzos. i'd drink if it wasn't for the fact that alcohol sets off my genetic predisposition to alcoholism. i'm all out of weed, and can't find anyone to hang out or play music with. i wish there was work in Austin, TX...i'd be out of here in the proverbial New York Minute. Confession: one night a few years back, I had so much bad coke that after my sinuses and throat were completely lined with the shit, I eventually resorted to rubbing it into my eyes.

It was one of those parties where everyone thought they were on the down low, hiding from everyone else while doing so much blow that eventually we all ended hiding from nobody because the whole party was in the bathroom.
