dumb pickup questions (p90/humbucker)

Post by kidding »

hello friends.

dumb questions, please don't hate me forever.

i have a guitar with two p90s. there's noise cancellation with both selected, and hum with either neck or bridge on its own. which is to be expected.

i'm considering replacing one of the pickups with a humbucker.

the dumb questions:

- is this a good idea, in general / broadly speaking? would i be better off just ~*~embracing the noise~*~ (or, if i can't come around to it, just replacing the guitar)?
- if i do it, should i replace the neck or the bridge pickup? (my instinct / my research so far says bridge, but the non-ilf internet is scary.)
- if i do it, will i have hum in the middle position (i.e. with one p90 and one humbucker selected)? in other words, will i be getting two noiseless configurations, or will i just be "moving" the noiseless config from a p90/p90 to just the humbucker?
- any p90-sized humbucker recommendations? right now i'm looking at the p90 super distortion from dimarzio, buuuut.
- is there another thing i can do to get rid of hum? i really like the p90s other than the noise.

if it's relevant, the guitar is this (http://www.dillionguitars.com/guitar/electric/DJ/DJM61/) and the music i play is sometimes spare/quiet enough that ideally i'd like to have Real Silence happen in the middle of songs.

I WARNED YOU THEY WERE DUMB. thank you for your patience.

To help with the hum you could shield all the cavities and check all the grounds.

If you decide to replace one of the pickups, I'd replace the one you use the most that way it will be hum free most of the time.
If you really want it hum free all the time and are going to go to the trouble of replacing one pickup you could just replace them both. :idk:

Either way, you should consider the DiMarzio Tone Zone: http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/soap-bar/tone-zone-p90

How about trying to switch out the bridge P-90 for a P-90 style humbucker? This post here has a pretty cheap option.

I searched, therefore I am.. here.

Any other P-90 sized humbucker recommendations? I have a few single coil guitars and I'd like to have one in the house with humbuckers. The only guitar I'd want to consider for it has P-90's right now. I guess I could route it out but i'd rather not. talk to me Goose.

again, the guitar fetish p180's or whatever they're called sound really good for the money..
and you can wire them so they still "sound" like single coils yet are humbucking... i forget it it's series or parallel, but a quick google search should clarify.

i have a combo of a p90 and p180 on one of my strats, and it's really cool and useful.

and the price is DEFINITELY right. hot tho...if i remember correctly, around 10-12k

you could put a minihumbucker in there, neil young style. It would fit without needing any mods.
