Can a dude get some thoughts on some artsy enclosures?

Post by NDominy »

I'm not really sure what led to me doing this, but I made a batch of pedal enclosures with collage/ mixed media type designs and I'm looking for some feedback/criticism/etc. I was mostly zoning in on old zines/show flyers, that non-quantized beat thing flying lotus does sometimes, book covers, and mad men during this process. They're all at various stages of completion, but making them was a lot of fun and I'm really curious about what other people think, so here's some works in progress:

I'm going to use some of them, but I'd also like to sell some for other people to build or rehouse pedals into. So my question is: Is this style something any of you dudes could get into? I'm thinking of keeping it cheap, like just enough to get them out there and to make sure I don't lose money.

So yeah, thoughts either way? I don't mind honest criticism :hello:

they look great!
From a critical standpoint, I think the label maker text looks out of place, and the cut out print fits much better.

Thanks! With the labelmaker, I thought it looked better than the real ransom note style Id need to use for certain words/phrases, but I know what you mean. Maybe I should keep an eye out for typewriter

thanks a ton for the feedback guys! I'll throw these up in the B/S/T once they're all finished, but feel free to PM me if you want to call dibs on any of them prior to that. It'll probably take another week or two, cause grad school

I can be pretty reasonable with pricing, especially while I'm still testing out how the finish holds up. I'm not too worried about it, but seeing as how this is the first time I've tried doing finishes like this, I feel like its smart to defer full judgement until they've been properly stomped on a few hundred times. I'd also be open to trades, so hit me up!

I've also got a bunch more designs to use and a few more enclosures, so there's more in the pipeline. I also just scored some sweet vintage star wars rubber stamps to play with and am thinking about finding some vintage knobs to pair with these for bonus mojo. sweet pedals should look sweet.

I see the squeegee but what kind of glue are you using and what do you use to get the mold release grease off the enclosure? they look great as long as you can remember what the knobs do. you did Carlin so maybe a Bill Hicks is in the cards?

I'm afraid I don't know anything about this mold release grease, have I missed a crucial step? This started impulsively and just snowballed from there, so I wouldn't be shocked if I overlooked something.

I'm using some kind of mod podge as both the glue and the first couple layers of sealant, it gives a nice brushstroke texture that I think compliments the vintage paper and rough edges. Then I clear coat the fuck out of them. The furthest along seem more solid than a lot of the designs I've gotten on DIY pedals before, but I guess only time will tell for sure.

I'd love to do something with Bill hicks, I'll have to see if he ever did a playboy interview back in the day. That's where most of these graphics came from, that and old national geographics.

when they cast a box, they grease the molds. as far as I know, most boxes need to have the mold release removed for best results with stickers. you should be fine without it though since you have so many layers of clear. I usually do a quick steel wool 000 followed by a dish detergent wash followed by a very hot water rinse using tongs.

the european album art for Aenema has it on the cover http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tool_aenima_cover_dedication_to_hicks.jpg

in america it was inside the foldout somewhere

what difference would the enclosure being powdercoated make? none of these were bare when I put the graphics on. I'll get these and a couple more finished soon!

powder coated enclosures do not have mold release on them since the last step of manufacturing is powder coating. they do have an added cost about %30 to %100 more so I do not use them on production runs.

those are way cool man. Dymo labels are always awesome but I LOVE the idea of the cutout words like in the last one.
