Modulation team assemble... V1 SMALL STONE

Post by DarkAxel »

Hey guys...

know that feeling when you find an awesome pedal but it doesn't do what you need for your band? Yeah, that was Faye Sing for me... So I sold it and here I am, short of some modulation... help me find something new, please ;)

i have an awesome tremolo (4ms Tremulus Lune) and i have all the flanger and vibrato I could need in my Digitech PDS 20/20. I'm thinking - either a phaser or some kind of a filter type thingie... My band operates in prog-rock with a lot of funk and jazz influence waters. The Faye Sing was awesome, but the voicing was just not right for the music

IDEALLY i need something that sounds good slow (in the best psychedelic ways, just long pads), middle rate in the funky manner AND fast, almost leslie fast. The first thing you might come up with is a Whetstone, but I had that and it wasn't right for me either - too complicated i guess... my favourite phasers up to date are a Boss PH-2 and a green Sovtek Small Stone.

also there's the thing... i want to try some new stuff

so i was thinking maybe CopilotFX Gyroscope 2? I could get a nice deal on the first one, but i'm mainly looking at the second one because of the different wave shape possibilities. My main concern is... is it inevitably wah-like filter or can it also be tame and similar to a phaser?

Also - does it sound good in front of dirt? That's the way i prefer my phaser/filter effects

i've got the money, now it's just about finding something right :) if the Gyro is not a good idea, i'm thinking about the Subdecay Baby Quasar a lot as well

I have a baby quasar and it sounds pretty well suited to what you described so I would recommend that, I've thought about other phasers but this one tends to just never sound bad or unsuitable for anything.
Only con is side mounted jacks and the footswitch is about an inch too high so it can be annoying to hit if it's not in the front row of your board.
If you can find for a decent price it's definitely worth trying. I use it after dirt but it sounds good before, just less prominent.
As far as filters go an IE Xerograph (deluxe) may be worth trying although I've found it hard to tweak to get more subtle sounds, especially depending where it is in your signal chain. Definitely a fun pedal though, and it sounds INSANE before fuzz in 4 pole mode :omg:

Or just buy a mobius and you're bound to find what you need eventually

What about: Cosmichorus V3, Proteus?

The Grand Orbiter seems really sweet. I'm looking for a phaser as well. I've discovered that I hate flangers and love phasers

Well there is the Sibling Phaser now, which is a slimmed down Whetstone...

I like the sounds of the Subdecay Quantum Quasar (and all of their mods and filters, but I'm narrowing it down):

Seems like you can get a variety of different sounds of the Quantum Leap, even though it's not strictly modulation:

The Iron Ether stuff (polytope and xerograph) also look super cool.

i've been thinking about Proteus, but i like the Gyro because it's not envelope controlled but LFO controlled :idk: don't really feel the need for Cosmichorus, i don't use chorus and as i said, i'm sorted for vibrato and flanger

yeah, it sounds cool, i'm just a tad afraid of the limited controls... having no Depth seems to be eliminating the possibility of having it set for mellow sounds

yeah, i heard some demoes and it really seems to do what i want, which is awesome :) definitely a strong candidate... and sadly, i don't have nearly enough money for a Mobius

no experience with the Gyro though? :( seems to be offering a lot of possibilities and interesting sounds, but i feel like no one is using it or selling it used etc. - kind of a forgotten toy, eh? Made a B/S/T thread for both Gyro and Baby Quasar, let's see what comes first :)

btw to clear up - i'm not looking for both filter and a phaser, i just don't really know what i need right now

I've had the gyro before, it definitely has a unique sound. It's a little more phasery than filtery from how I remember it. It's a very fun effect, but I wouldn't say there was anything mellow about it. The latest version looks pretty nifty and I know I've been tempted by it... but I don't know if it would work well for what you're describing. Though, it is definitely outside of the sounds that you currently have at your disposal :idk:

to be honest, i do the leslie-ish stuff with my flanger, so that is not really THAT important :idk:

seems to me that the only way how to buy one is new from Prymaxe :idk:

Have you given the Prometheus some consideration? That is definitely a toy that opens up minds for different sounds. Might be too pricey though. :dunno:

Just got a Prometheus DLX recently (Prymaxe sale) and that thing is no joke, tons of awesome sounds crammed in that pedal. :thumb:

again - the same problem as with proteus, envelope controlled, not LFO (except for the sample-hold mode)... the LFO modulated filtering of the Gyro really attracts me, that's for sure

i might have to just order some from Prymaxe with a discount... if i don't like it, hopefully someone will take it off my hands :idk: i just messaged Rygot, i heard he had one...

I would also vote for some form of the quasar. Those things are so thick and lush, but you can dial them back. Ive been saving up for another recently :)
