I was able to fix my new Ric and its properly working now. There was a .0047 cap attached to the volume pot of the bridge pickup that was cutting nearly half the output. This was a stock cap that would normally go to the stock hi-gain Ric pickups. I took that out and swapped the 500k tone pot with the 250k volume pot. Honestly, I don't know if it was the 250k volume pot or the .0047 cap that was cutting the output of the bridge humbucker, but now with the cap gone and the volume pot up to 500k, both pickups are at full output and balance in volume pretty well.

Turns out the humbucker is a vintage DiMarzio Super Distortion. Anyone play out of one of these before? It's got a lot of low end and low mids. I'm assuming that some of the highs are rolled off because the tone pot is only 250k. I don't want to replace it for the sake of not losing it, but it also makes up for the guitar being all maple (obv known for being on the brighter side of tone). I'm still thinking of replacing the humbucker as I feel it'll get too muddy with fuzz stacked over fuzz and playing C# (standard). I played it at lower volumes and it was already reminding me of why I don't really care for humbuckers too much.

I'm just stoked everything's working properly after a bit of doodling around inside with my solder gun.

I was playing a buddy of mine's Kramer DMZ 2000 a ton over the holidays, and I really really dug how the DiMarzio Super Distortions sounded in that guitar. Definitely gave me some GAS.

I just to play mine at full volume with my stereo rig. It sounds good but too hot for what I'm doing. I like stacking fuzz over fuzz and it gets a little out of control when it's being pushed hard with gain. I read up on them a little and it seems the output on them was never consistent back then. Some ranging from 8k-9k and some up to 13k-15k. I don't have a way to measure mine but I gotta assume it's up in the latter. Shit got wild feedback when pushed, haha. I also haven't played humbuckers in a while. All I've been playing out of the last two years has been a fat, Bareknuckle P90 (which kicks major ass). So, looks like I'll be getting a P90 in a humbucker size for this. I'll have the Super D up in the b/s/t in a bit if anyone's interested. Sounded great, just not my thing. I'm a single coil type of guy.

I play buckers mostly and plugged in my dean palomino the other day and was just annoyed even at the p90style

Definitely this. And no, I don't think it's F spaced. I used to okay Les Paul's and loved the 57's I had in there but ever since picking up a Bareknuckle P90 for my Tele I was a full converter. Then I started playing a Ric and started falling for Fender type of single coils (Jazzy, Tele, etc) more and more and now I always feel Humbuckers sound muddy to me. As well as thin at times. I also started to get into clean amps and clean tone to play pedals over. So, hot single coils just kind of always felt warmer and fatter to me after that.

Thanks. I saw those yesterday but read up a little on them and heard they have a scooped mids eq curve. Definitely looking for something thicker. I'm thinking The Creamery's Hum-90 or maybe a Bareknuckle, since I love the one in my Tele.

Ah yeah, scooped mids would be a no-go for me too. Need that punch.

I'm not trying to convince you to buy my pickups, but they don't have scooped mids, just "a touch less mid range" (Lollar) than P90s. Where did you hear that they're scooped?

So far I am having so much fun playing through just a fuzz and reverb and letting the guitar shine. It truly does play like a dream. I didn't know if I would like the shortscale but it is a pleasant change. It is inspiring to start really "playing" guitar!

It has a wonderful, loving home and I have been treating it like a baby. I've been playing a significant amount more of guitar now that I have something i can be actually proud of!! I let my buddy play it and he said it was life changing, he could play songs that he couldnt normally play on other guitars because of how perfectly set up the guitar is. The intonation is a bit off, but nothing major. The pickups are hot and full and with verb - wooooooaaaaah!!
