I need help in my fuzz hunt!

Post by jaywar »

So I'm back in the market for another fuzz pedal, and I figured where else to turn to but here for some input? I've had a big muff for a long time that I've grown fond of running my acoustic through, but for my electric I bought a Mastotron a while back, and it's been a pretty cool pedal with lots of different sound options, but it's just not doing it for me anymore. It's too synthy for me and gets pretty muddy with the subs. I'm looking for something pretty warm and smooth that still growls and sounds like it's ripping its way through the speakers. It also needs to be pretty loud, because I've got a Total Spack Vibes that's set a pretty high volume standard on the board. I've been looking into the Woolly Mammoth and the Team Awesome Fuzz Machine pretty intensely, and a friend just recently recommended the MXR 108 but I've never had any other experience with it.

Thoughts? Advice? Thank you!

Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder or BABY THUNDAA are worth a look.

Yeah, an Eau Claire Thunder or a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine would do nicely.

The Mastotron is just a modded Woolly Mammoth, so you should look elsewhere if you don't like the Masto.

The TAFM is great, does just what you described, the ECT looks like it does (but I've never tried one). The Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom is another great pedal with a different character. Have a poke around the stuff offered by all the builders here, because there are plenty of great fuzz pedals around these parts.

I have both the TAFM and Baby Thundaa. The Thundaa kicked the TAFM off my bass board. Both are great options, but I get better overdriven and low gain sounds from the Thundaa in addition to crazy fuzz.

I have to second the ECT or TAFM. I always use my TAFM for smoother but still aggressive fuzz.

Aren't most of these suggestions muff variants? Sounds like you might want to look into some kind of germanium fuzz. Never tried one though so I don't know.

Not to overstate my suggestion but the TAFM is germanium and not a muff variant if I am not mistaken.

Yeah, I was mostly talking about the Dwarfcraft ones mentioned. I read those were inspired by the muffs but I don't know how muffy they are lol

EQD Dream Crusher. nice and smooth at lower gain settings, growly at max gain. Gets really loud.
