it was less of a grail than something i borrowed because i had no pedals at the time, but i played through an op-amp Muff and absolutely hated it. no bottom end, and impossible to adjust to anything other than total screaming oblivion.

Didn't like the Wolf Computer either, except in a feedback loop...even when it's doing sub-octave wackiness or farting, I still can't get into the general fuzz toan.
Out of the SM/TP/VFM/DB/Ruiner I haven't yet found anything that I like enough on bass to keep. I love the craziness of Devi's pedals, just gotta find the right combo of circuits. People keep saying the SM is super bassy, I don't get it...and the DB, like, kills all of yr highs. There's gotta be a sweet in-between.

AENIMA. It's not pouring with lows but it sounds sooo good. Especially with oscillation.
I don't know why I ever sold mine

The one I had did have bottom in spades. The screech to it could never be dialed out and it didn't clean up at all. It wasn't a bad sound at all but I wasn't something that jibed with my playing. Or my amp at the time, a silverface Fender -- adds up to lots of bass and lots of mid scoop. It's probably no mistake that a lot of doom guys who like Muffs also like amps with a Baxandall type eq that doesn't have the mid scoop of most Fender, Marshall, and Vox tone stacks.

They are a utility and should be used as such...

In my case I wanted an amazing Muff for bass and the Pharaoh was drooled over when it first came out. Most of the forums touted it as a superior option. I didn't want it to sound like a Fuzzface, Tonebender or a Metal Zone, just a solid muff that retained my lows. I play loud and don't mind a bit of hiss or extra noise, but the noise level was a bit too much for me. Plus I couldn't stand anywhere near my amp without immediate feedback. The overall tone of the pedal is great, and I wouldn't discourage anyone form buying one. I'm just saying it didn't work for me. I've since flipped the Pharaoh and tried a couple of other muffs and a TAFM but settled on a Baby Thundaa for my main fuzz sound. Gear forums can set off a hype storm and it can be easy to get caught up in the fervor.

the fact that i was playing through a Peavey combo amp that predated the band (i.e. pre-1982) and lived up to the bad rep Peaveys had then probably didn't help, either.

This is another unpopular opinion for sure but I didn't dig the Fuck OD as much as I thought I would. Perhaps it has something to do with me/my gear :idk:
...But the one that takes the cake was Skullservants Wow and Flutter. I wanted one forever like before I joined this website I saw a youtube demo, then it came and it wasn't all that usable as far as the weirdness goes, not to mention huge.

I've only tried a 900, but yeah. But I may have been equalizing it poorly, so...

+1 on the wolf computer too, I couldn't get it to sound like any of the demos I heard.

Devi Ever Hyperion. I've owned three of them, and I keep telling myself, "yeah, they sound pretty neat, it'll be great." But they never work with my pre-amp or my playing style. Only way I enjoyed playing it was with the texture way way down, and that was pretty much a 33/SodaMight/Silver crank sound.

This brings me back to my TB days a few years ago, but my entry here is the BJFE Blueberry. People have been freaking out about that pedal for a good 6 or 7 years now over on TB, basically claiming that it's THE holy grail bass overdrive of all time. Well I did a partial trade for one involving an original Digitech Bass Whammy, and I was supremely underwhelmed. It was just like, really? THIS is what all the fuss is over? It was just so damned boring. So I turned around and traded it straight up for an Empress Superdelay. :thumb:

This...sorta. But everytime I want to sell it, I plug in and change my mind. I never move the texture knob past 9 o'clock. But it's great.

I had a univibe tape echo that I loved but I didn't like having it always running or having to completely take it out of the chain. It was just a pain, so I sold it.

Death by Audio pedal seem so promising to what i want in my sound. The fuzz gun, overdriver, and fuzz war didn't do anything for me. The soundwave breakdown was fucking awesome but all the useable sounds I found were in the harmonic transformer.

Not quite a GRAIL, but a story.

So I tried the Fix'd Fuzz in as guitar shop in New York, and bought it cuz it's rad (and i still have it).
The guy at the store was like "DOOD, these guy make the ultimate russian/magic/6 knob big muff, which I use in all my world tours and shit. But we're out of stock."

So I was all like "cool! :!!!: "

Flew back to Australia. I ordered the Musket from Blackout, super excited to be able to replace my fancy unreliable russians.

Finally! it arrived- and it was ok.
It's since been flipped.
