The Doom Room: ILF Edition

I hate to be a downer, but I feel like "doom" is going through the same hipster renaissance that "black metal" did. I'm not trying to dis anyone here, or anyone anywhere specifically. I'm just saying it's a zeitgeist which is a nice way of calling it trendy. Yes, The Melvins have been around for decades (and are not traditional 'doom' anyway) but it seems to me that it was one of the least mainstream forms of metal and thus akin to the really ugly clothes at Salvation Army that nobody wanted until some kids who were trying to find some fashion that hadn't been appropriated yet. Granted, doom metal is much cooler than stained bike shorts and a paisley blouse. I just don't trust anyone who doesn't make or appreciate doom "naturally"; that is, regardless of what anyone else is doing.

There aren't many Doom shows in Ireland, and if there are they're in Dublin, miles away from me. So that means I don't know the scene that well. I know about the gear side and the sitting at home listening to it side, but I listen to it on an mp3 player or while browsing gear forums on my PC, so I don't know where that puts me. I don't actually like Doom that much. Traditional Doom, to me, sounds too heavy and extreme. I like heavy instrumental Doom, but Sleep is too repetitive and drawn out for me. I like bands like YOB, Indian, Tombs, Cult of Luna, Giant Squid, Earth, bands that all blend different genres together. Indian and Tombs are Death/Black Metal and Doom, Earth is Drone and Instrumental Rock, Giant Squid is Alternative Metal and Stoner Rock, Cult of Luna is Post-Metal, and YOB are just fucking awesome.

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating for traditional doom over other styles. I typically like my music to have some crossover in style, and I'm definitely no doom expert. I'm just reflecting on a trend I've percieved, and as a previous poster noted, it's part of the same trend of "stoner rock" and everything else that's had a resurgence.

I can't blame music fans for liking something, but I am highly skeptical of a band that sets out to be a certain style, especially when that style is experiencing a rebirth in popularity. Also I've noticed many musicians of other genres (especially -blech- FOLK, and indie pop) adding "doom" to their self-descriptions. Just throwing it on there like an internet search tag, a signifier of coolness they paste onto otherwise uncool music. They use the word "punk" that way too, and every other category that's slapped onto their shit.

Even gear-wise: a few years ago everybody and their mothers was buying Fender amps and offset guitars and playing weepy post-rock stuff. I feel like stoner and doom are taking that place now, I've never seen so many people playing SGs and Orange amps as I see nowadays.

I don't wander much on ebay but I bet that vintage Matamps, Greens and Sunn amps prices are higher than ever.

I require further explanation. Dimed Oath and Ritual with no knobs or footswitch? That would be the doomiest pedal ever.

Anybody know if the Badascan is coming down the pipe as a production pedal? Because if it is it may be time for me to let go of my Twosome and pick up an Elements...

It will have 2 footswitches and 1 knob for the Ritual.

LED placement is still being worked out, but it will def look killer. It might have a toggle for flipping the order of the two but that hasn't been decided yet.

So I just had a really positive jam session with my new Telecaster. I've figured something out about this guitar: it needs dirt, a lot of dirt, to sound the way I like a guitar to sound. It's too thin and without sustain on a clean setting. The amp just isn't pushed hard enough. But with gain, the dynamics pop out, the sustain is back, and feedback is clear and organic. The new strings are starting to settle in (my first experience with DR Strings), and I'm finally starting to settle with the guitar.

Just got a bottle of Eagle Rare for the office to replace the empty bottle of Bulleit. I think it all got consumed the same night. So my coworkers and I are really getting into bourbon. (We've also been on a fancy scotch kick after the bosses kept bringing back Bruichladdich from trips to Europe. Mmm. Octomore is so tasty.)

I just had some of the Bulleit 10 year last night, awesome stuff. I really like Bulleit bourbon because it has such a high rye content, rye whiskey is my favorite.

Sunn amps are out of control price wise. on the good side of this if people are buying them for hipster cred they will be selling them as soon as they find a new trend to follow, and they'll be cheap again.
