I've got both a Carvin B2000 and a ShuttleMax 12.0. Both are stupid light and sound great. I still want to spend some time with tubes though.

Has anybody checked out the Jules Monique? It is a tube pre that has is supposed to sound sweet! It is light, and not too expensive ($400ish?).

The Monique is a little north of a G, for the least expensive model.

I want to blame it on the tubes, like they need switching out or something, but...in my heart the 400 is the favorite by a liiittle. They each yield different toans, so...

The Peavey VB-2 is a turd. Don't blame the glass, it has crap for iron. Especially the output transformer. I've seen a number of new Peavey models that just don't work right stock. I use to defend Peavey but they lost it a few years back. They really do make crap now. I still like some of their old stuff though.

Hmm...you might be right. It has always felt "almost there", like the sound I want from it is a bit lacking. I've been thinking of selling it on TB or somethin' since getting the 400.

Nah, it's like this:

Except mine is "distortion" instead of "harmonics" and instead of the fuzz control, it has a distortion level control. It also doesn't have the master volume. I can't find any pics of it on Google. It's from 1975; I got it paired with a matching 215 from an older dude on Craigslist.
The distortion channel is pretty mediocre but I love the way it sounds bridged with the clean channel...and the clean is easy to drive alone as well. Really like it.
I know the Mark-types are popular with doom guys but beyond that I don't really know much.

Dunno what kind of toob amp I'd like right now. It'd have to be older and in the range of $500
Ampeg has good toanz but I don't want the characteristic sound all of the time.
Not that I need one right now anyway.

That is the amp that I though you were talking about. There are two in my shop right now. The customer that brought them in has at least four of them. He tours with them. I've been trying to talk him into letting me replace the power amp with the 400H module. I like the mid 70's PV stuff. They took some of the things Vox was doing in the 60's and really ran with them.

So I just played my first two gigs with a tube bass setup and wow it was so great. Part of that may have been switching to a 2x15 as well. I used to use a MarkBass 210 combo, and the combo + a 410 with my louder band, but this week it was 2x15 with a Guild Thunderbass on top for one gig and a Twin Reverb for the other. It sounded so good, and I even still love my Rusty Box on the frontend of these. Seems a little weird at first to go from something so small and powerful down to the cheap, bulky rig putting out 10-20% of the power but the 15s are loud enough.

I would like a little more power though. Also to trade the Twin into a V4 somehow. Time to look for an affordable 200W solution. I'm not super interested in an SVT but it may be easier to find one of those or a 400+. Or maybe a second 100W and wire the cab for stereo though I don't really want to bi-amp. The Markbass should catch a decent price on craigslist, I've definitely sold quite a few things to talkbassy types locally over the last couple years.
