Ryan tests everything with a 1 spot, if I recall. I run my board with a Cioks Pussy Power (isolated outputs is the shit). Their DC8 and DC10 are also good. Everything Vodoo Labs makes is also nice. Depending on how many pedals you want to power and what they are there will be different solutions, but you can't go wrong with any of the above three. Don't use random 9 volt adapters from your local electronics store, the filtering isn't good enough and you'll hear crappy noise in your pedals.

Last thing I want to do is fry anything out of negligence. I am currently in the process of building my own board and was looking for some feedback on this.

Here I'm using a Voodoo Lab PP2+ and a Carl Marin Powerjack. Both work very good.
One Spot is good too.

Man, this is so important! This is the cause of the majority of service emails I get for pedals, random 9V adapters that aren't up to the task of powering guitar pedals.

It's really important to use an adapter that is regulated and filtered, that means the voltage is clamped at or right around 9V and the voltage is filtered against line noise, regulator noise, rectification noise, all the noises that happens to a DC voltage.

I use the One Spot, it's a great adapter, quiet and reliable. Same with the Godlyke Power-all and the BOSS PSA-120S. These are great adapters, perfect for powering one pedal and sometimes perfect for powering several pedals. The thing about them is they're switch mode power supplies, which means they generate their output voltage by running internally at a really high frequency. This can cause noise/interference with digital pedals, sometimes, for some people.

I also use the Voodoo Labs PP2+, it's a top notch supply for running several pedals. It ain't bulletproof though... more and more I hear cases of people using the PP2+ with pedals that are rated for higher current than the supply puts out and it compromises the power to other pedals plugged in. So watch out there... even 'isolated' power supplies are still one transformer providing current for everybody.

I don't have any experience with Cioks stuff but I'd love to get one of their supplies, seems like top notch stuff for sure.

Feel free to ask any power supply questions you have!

The cioks stuff doesn't turn up second hand here much, at least not their professional range (which is the range worth buying - their other stuff is okay but mostly not isolated). If I see one I'll give you a shout Ryan. New, the DC8 (the most "basic") goes for 1800 crowns, 265 CAD, so even though they are made next door in Denmark they're cheaper to get via one of the online retailers in the States.

*shudders* I wouldn't think of using a standard plug from someplace like Radio Shack, even on a crappy pedal. My main concern was really getting the best performance out of the pedals I do have. The weirdest things can factor into sound, hence the question. Its been 20 years since I have invested in pedals like this and pedals have gotten much better since the late eighties.

I was really curious if there was an optimal pedal power source for Dr Scientist pedals.

Man, you wouldn't believe how frequently that happens, guys using whatever random adapter they find around the house or Radio Shack, and then I get a ticked off email about the pedal being broken or not tested etc.. it actually causes me a lot of anxiety!

I wouldn't really say there's an optimal power source, just several gooders, and it really depends on your needs. As long as you're using a power supply that was specifically made to be quiet and clean for guitar pedals you should be set, they're pretty much all regulated and filtered and quiet. The problems show up when one starts daisy chaining or sharing supplies or over-working them... that's when you get into the weird noises and hums, sometimes.

Definitely going to be adding a Cosmichorus, and I'm being increasingly tempted by The Elements, so my "board" will likely be half Dr. Scientist in the near future.

Oh cool, didn't know that RRR finish was the only one like that! I managed to snag it in a trade off Vancouver Craigslist of all places.
