I know he uses a Fuzz War sometimes but I can't imagine that's what it sounds like...

Probably not what they are using at all, but I would give this one a try.

Mikal definitely sounds like a fuzz war. Not sure about the other but fuzzstang may suffice.

sounds like a fuzz war to me with mikal as well. Those group of guys: Ty Segall, Mikal, Charlie moonheart are pretty notorious for just using a fuzz war. Saw them all play in austin about a month ago with ty segall band. All of them had a fuzz war.

Yeah I've seen them a couple times and that's what they were using. I've just read a lot of bad things about that pedal...

Fuzz-Stang sounds pretty cool

That the mids are really scooped and the DBA build quality is not the best.

And the demos I've seen don't sound anything like that song to me :idk:

Most Fuzz War demo are done with humbucker equiped guitar.
Listen to this clip:

Lower gain with single coil at 3:50

Personally I'm not a fan of DBA.

I'd try a gnarly, spitty fuzz like sylnau mentioned - Fuzz Stang should get you in the ballpark.

I have demos of it with both passive humbuckers and active EMG's in my sig.

I don't know... all of those sounds are pretty layered. I didn't really hear one distinct fuzz sound in any of them.

But I like playing this game... any more clips of the sound you want?

Nope. I almost thought the Mikal Cronin one was like some kind of gated big muff. Like I can almost get a similar sound with my Hoof but it's missing a certain crackle or something.

Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz (when you push the Trim to max it almost sound like a germanium big muff).
Here's a demo I've made:
