The most strange/gimmicky pedal you use regularly

Post by askashrub »

I got to thinking about this because I - like you - want to buy every new pedal I see.
But often the most unique and intriguing pedals also have the least musical application.

So I got to wondering, are there some seemingly impractical pedals that have found a home in your sound?

For me, to date the answer is...no

I like my XP-100...

Mostly for octave down bends. Some of the harmonies are really fun. I cannot think of a better pedal in the pricerange.

Eh...I guess the Kaoss Pad 3? I don't use it as a gimmick (mainly for looping/stuttering effects) but I could see how someone could think the X-Y pad is largely unnecessary.

I don't know, my definition of strange/gimmicky seems to be something that I could play with by myself for hours but just can't work into a song. So this seems like kind of a contradiction in that way.

Right now, I do have an oscillating fuzz that I use for the outro of a song where I let it drone and use other pedals/vol pot to change the pitch/timbre of the oscillation to make kind of a sludge/noise/faux-dubstep breakdown. I'm literally not playing a note on my guitar, but it's strangely musical.

I didn't think I'd use my Randy's Revenge for a whole lot besides wacky sounds. But I love how it mixes with my clean tone actually whether the mix on it is higher or lower.

Noisebox. Totally has no use other than to make insane noises.
