bass compressors
does anybody even use these things around here? there's a distinct lack of fuzz in my band these days (i know, i know), and i want something to give me lots of sustain and smooth out my attack a bit. i pick wayyy too hard on the little bronco i'm swinging around. anyone have a preferred a model? the markbass one is looking sexy to me, but the 200 dollar price tag seems steep.

^^ Yeah that's what I used too. The MXR gets a lot of love and is reasonably priced. I use the BBE Opto Stop and love it. It's simple and easy to use. But... It's also the only one I've ever used.

My favorite comp pedal is the Demeter Compulator.

Can't go wrong with Diamond, MXR, or Demeter.

Yeah, I've been considering me an MXR compressor myself sometime in the not too distant future, having heard a lot of good things. Also, the LED display of compression apparently helps as sort of training wheels, so that's nice.

Re: bass compressors
Demeter, Keeley (I prefer the 4 knobbie job) Diamond, and FEA Labs are top contenders.

Re: bass compressors
I tried a couple of the favorites back in the day and always found them too polite/transparent. Maybe it's because I didn't view compression as an always-on utility pedal. I wanted an EFFECT. I wanted a compressor that squashed the ever-loving shit out of my signal, and gave me ridiculous sustain and make all of the harmonics and ghost notes pop out at you. So I spoke to Cyrus (the guy that writes ovnilabs, bongomania on talkbass), and he steered me towards the Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone. That is a phenomenal compressor, but be warned, it has a heavy hand, and clamps down like a vise on your signal. But you can get ridiculous amounts of sustain with it. I have a track that is a 4-minute-long noise track, which is just a single note through the PT cranked up all the way, and it just sustains for the entire song.

Re: bass compressors
One thing you can do is find an old rack-mount unit and use it as an effect. I've been carrying a Symetrix 525 in my backpack for years.
But I am looking for something different now. I think I want the FEA Opti-Fet or the Markbass Compressore.

If you're able to, talk to Bongo.
