15" speaker questions

Post by hazelwould »

I'm getting a 1x15" bass cab, but I'd like to replace the speaker for one suited for guitar. I'll be running a loud tube amp into it. I'd like a versatile speaker that can go from doom to anything cleaner. Im wanting deep and midrangey, but also great clean with some chime. I'm goin to 1x15" for more lows.

Any recommendations?

Also, since I'll be running 100+ watts should I go for a 100 watt speaker or more wattage? Also, what about the ohms. Any advantage of 4 vs 8 or whatever? I'm a noob with this as I've only worked with combos.

How many ohms does your amp output? What's the ohmage of any cab you might run the speaker with?

Offhand, I might look at the Eminence Commonwealth 15. It's supposed to be a JBL-ish thing, 225 watts.

Yeah, no real advantage to certain ohmage. You just want it to match up to what the amp says.
A lot of amps will have a selector for 2, 4, 8, 16 or some combination of those.

I have a 215 with Eminence Legend 1518s ($89) in it and they sound really good.
They are 150w so as long as you are under that, you should be OK.

I don't know much here, other than the 15" Peavey Black Widow that my amp guy let me play through for a little while sounded super badass. I went with a less expensive old Magnavox or something like that, and I think I might already have ripped it. Hahahahaha. Wish I woulda just ponied up for the Black Widow. Sounded really full across the frequency range (I was playing guitar through it with a 10 or 15W tube amp.)

Sweet! The cab comes with a black widow. It just needs a new speaker basket. So I figured since that's about $70 I mine as well get an actual guitar speaker.
