Do you think that trios can effectively do shoegaze live? Seems like you need at least two guitars.
Any examples you might know? (sort of a thread hijack, but may be helpful to Mr. Darko)

Well, this band I'm forming is my friend Tommy on bass, me on guitar, and a drummer. And Tommy's playing bass like a guitar player, and I'm playing guitar like a bass player. So, power chords abound, really. I think it'll work, honestly.

Here's another Trio that can get Gazey
Another thing about Shoegaze is the playing. It's really a case of tone being in the fingers or rather fingering. Interesting Triads and dyads can make or break a gazey tone. LIke the above example. Major 7 No 5 Triads are gaze for dayzeeee

You should start a cover band called "The Halo 3".

some folks might argue whether they're shoegaze or not, but Galaxie 500.

PumpkinPieces wrote:You don't really neeed.... reverb. Add space by using complex chords or letting high strings ring out/drone. Then add reverb if needed. I'd say keep it punk with the Rat. There are so many current shoegaze-inspired bands that rely on delay/verb with fuzz why not take the swirlies approach and have raw ass guitar tones contrasted with super pretty cleans?
Not to put down the way other bands do it, I'm just offering a different route.
Oh, you know whats in almost every single one of my favorite shoegaze songs? A wah pedal. I don't feel like that gets talked about enough. Crazy fun expressive texture changing device.
Gone Fission wrote:Yeah, although there's some MBV wah usage, what's getting me looking at the decade-neglected Crybaby is getting heavily into Medicine the last couple years.
I'd go for super-effecty sounding reverbs or not bother. Modulated verbs, shimmer-verb (octave-up pitch shift in a feedback loop of the digital delay lines comprising the reverb), "infinite reverb," reversed envelope stuff like in Alesis and SPX stuff. If not for that stuff, I'd rather get heavy-handed with delays, and amp reverb on top of that can mush things up too much (unless it just sounds brilliant -- try it despite what some forum jackass -ahem- tells you). I like delays that can self-oscillate and would pick that capability above a lot of other modern features. Especially if you're not doing reverb, two delays covering different fronts (clean and crisp/dirty and chaotic, say) is nice.
Pitchy stuff is my final frontier. It's essential to a lot of Medicine stuff (Midiverb) and followers have made a religion out of Boss PS-2's Mode 7.
these are all good points. i'm really fond of chord sequences --G chord shapes in particular--with a drone in the middle strings that makes weird polychords as you shift. that Joni Mitchell-via-Bob Mould kind of thing. for adding just a taste of delay with reverb, the RV-3 is great with the Mix set to 70% dry or so...it puts just a little digital grain, a little Madchester into the tone. amplifier reverb at just the right (subtle) setting, combined with an OTT digi-verb when apropos, can be your best friend. lately i like to put it on about 2 along with the Ghost Echo.
an alternative approach to wah which i mentioned above is an envelope filter...Shields often uses a Meatball set to sweep down. i like to set my EMMA to a Steve Stills Super Session wah-wah attack because i'll fall down if i try to do that with a pedal.
i absolutely meant that one should try using modern multiprocessors for the stunt reverbs/delays etc.; i've wound up with the SPX90/Alesis stuff because it's old and therefore cheap, but if you can get a box that does a couple or three of those things at once why not? and i'm also looking at various kinds of pitch stuff, though i haven't gotten quite so far into harmonizing. i've got a setting for the Yamahas where i stack a long delay with a EQed 1-cent pitch shift to make it sparkly, and i'm also really into the middle Pitch Modulation setting on the TC SCF which is an oscillator-controlled pitch shifter you can blend with the chorus.
i've got a feeling that the Bluebird Fuzz would be great for teh gaze...just step on it and everything goes blurry.
a tremolo of some sort on the guitar would be ideal, but it's not essential. there's as many bands that didn't use them as did.

Re: SUGGESTIONS: Donny's gonna be gazin!
Just started a 3 piece Shoegaze band and was wondering about whether another guitarist was necessary. We seem to be doing ok without but I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm using an El Cap with the wow and flutter and other tape mangling controls maxed, melting tones. Also have a Cathedral before my fuzz and Fuck OD.

Also, I've said this in every "best pedal for shoegaze" thread ever, but Mid-Fi Clari(not) (fuzz version) (or clean version with either a Rat or Wolf Computer going into it). Seriously. It can nail the whole "strum with your hand on the whammy bar" thing. Which means you can use your whammy bar to make it EVEN CRAZIER.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I don't think of 'em as 'gaze, but whadda I know? (There're certainly elements there, but to say that's a large part of their sound is a stretch.)

Out of what you already own, just use what you like best. I'd use a Rat for anything...jazz, country, punk, metal, shoegaze, hip hop, etc. Don't think to much. Just do what comes natural.

i think there are also ideas you can adapt from shoegaze-precursor trios that can apply to the gaze trio concept. i'm thinking specifically of Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., and Jesus and Mary Chain (who were a trio + singer), and early R.E.M. as well, who were a massive influence on mid-period MBV as evidenced by the Strawberry Wine/Ecstasy/Feed me With Your Kiss EPs.
