Bass amp for gigging recommendations

Post by jfrey »

So I'm looking for a good setup for gigging. I probably will be waiting a while before buying anything because my new group is just starting up, but I'd like some ideas to look around for. Right now what I have is suitable for practice, but wouldn't be for a gig. The group is a drum and bass duo playing doom/sludge/grunge/post-rock. I'd like to spend $500 or less, but if that isn't feasible I guess I can go higher. I'm not really sure what prices are since I have until recently always been predominantly a guitarist.

Peavey is your friend. 215s, Black Widows, excellent doom-to-price ratio.

It looks like the only 215 they have is almost a thousand dollars.

Used dude!

Check out the Mark series & accompanying cabs from the 80's. Dirt cheap and MEGA LOUD.

YES! Old ones my friend

Really, Peavey shit is built so solid that even most of the stuff from the 70's I've played has been rock solid

I used a Mark VI and a 1x15 Black Widow cab for like 8 years. Shit is bulletproof and loud as hell for the money.

The biggest fucking Ampeg you can afford.

BTW I know of a couple of companies around DC that rent SVTs
cheaper than buying one.

Basically, go on Craigslist and eBay, and look for 70's solid state heads, and 2x15s. Acoustic's sell for <$200 all day on eBay.

I got a late 70's Peavey 2x15 that is louder'n hell. I had to fill/ drill speaker mounting holes and it's stuffed with vintage fiberglass insulation (da'fuuuu??) BUT it is kerrazzzyyy loud.
