Dude was way wacky, and screwed up....in no small part due to an abusive childhood.
But, you can't front on his talent, musically, or on the dance floor.....from the Jackson 5 days on.
For me, it's still about "Off The Wall" which my family had on 8-track tape when I was little, and I now own on CD. He and Quincy were a match made in heaven.
I had to bust out the "Thriller" picture disk in honor and remembrance.

you know, Thriller was and still is a killer album. It's a staple in my record collection and it really is one of the best, BUT I'm tired of the american news' focus on entertainers when they die. It gets really tiring. The NUMBER ONE news story last night, this morning, and probably all this weekend, is Michael Jackson's death. really. I have to go to BBC to get my news on what's happening in this country. Oh nevermind troops are pulling out of Iran and people are killing each other left and right over there...Michael Jackson is dead.

The last picture ever taken of MJ was of him basically dead (not yet pronounced) in the back of an ambulance with an oxygen mask on his face and a tube down his throat. disgraceful.

I really am truly saddened by Michael Jackson's death. I think he was an amazing performer and that he put out some great albums. But he's not coming back so stop telling me he's still dead american network news.

Current lead story on http://www.bbc.co.uk is Michael Jackson.

I still agree with you on the poor US news.

I agree with the "famous when you're dead" aspect of American media in general.......
BUT, in this case, Michael Jackson is not just another celebrity. He is one of the most famous, celebrated, and loved entertainers WORLDWIDE ever to walk the planet.
He's been famous since he was 5 years old, and has been an icon in the public consciousness for over 4 decades.
His influence on the dance world is almost unsurpassed. And he was one of the first and biggest MTV video stars, selling huge amounts of records in that era. I know many of you were not even born or were in diapers when Thriller came out, but that shit was ubiquitous. I've never seen a pop phenomenon like that since.
I could go on and on. This is the passing of an icon on the Elvis level, but even bigger globally.
The amount of TV coverage does not surprise me one bit.

I was 13 when Thriller came out. All the none musical people and little tweens liked Michael Jackson. The cooler musical pop star was Prince with 1999.

Michael Jackson couldn't hold a candle to Prince.

I don't agree with that.

Think about Hendrix or Cobain. They both live much shorter lives, but they had a much more significant impact on music.

Michael Jackson had an impact on magazine articles and tabloid sensationalism.

Actually... He did pave the way for people with little musical ability to strike it big in the music biz. All ya gotta do is dance.

You can thank Michael Jackson for Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.

I ain't sayin' nothin'

I want to... but I ain't.

Actually, MTV did that.
If you can't admit that (even as a grade schooler) MJ had mad vocal talent.....then you need to spit out the hater-ade. There seems to be a big ass water cooler full of it in these forums.
