Tell me if this is right

Post by wsas3 »

As some of you may know, my amp has been busted for a while, and Ive been using a shitty solid state.
Finally, I brought it to my local music store who has a amp tech. He got back to me and said it needed:
New power supply board
Overhaul (?)
Microprocessor
4 integrated circuits replaced
Just since I dont know a lick aboht fixing amps, does all that make sense? If so, does 200 dollars sound like a fair price? Thats what he priced it at.
thanks so much!!

A Peavey classic 30 from the mid-90's. sorry, should have mentioned that.

Idk that sounds like a lot for an amp that costs between 300-350

Used, yeah its around that price. Sadly, its less expensive than getting a new amp, and money is tight, so I may just have to go for it :/

What'd you do to it for it to get busted up in the first place?

Sounds about right. If you really like that amp I'd go ahead and fix it as long as you trust the tech to do a good job.

Looking at the guts of a 30, looks like there is a fair amount of stuff in there, at first I was baffled but then I looked up guts

personally id say its somewhere in between a bit high to totally crazy.

a classic 30 is not the simplest amp but it isn't exactly complicated either.

Microprocessor
4 integrated circuits replaced

did he actually say microprocessor? if were talking about the same classic 30, there is definitely no microprocessor in this amp. Have you ruled out any possible issues coming from the tubes?

and all the ICs are really standard op amps that cost next to nothing and if they blew its more likely a symptom of a larger problem, not the ICs themselves.

if i were you i would offer him less just to see what he says.

^yeh i agree with all said here.

The whole microproccessor thing is sketchy, unless the amps reverb is digital.. Even still that terminology is slightly :wha?:

The ICs will cost max like 20 dollars to replace

Something is strange here

All the amp techs I've dealt with have been in the range of $30-$45 an hour, plus parts (NYC may be more).

I always ask them to SHOW me what they are going to be replacing before they start
and then SHOW me what they did replace once they are finished.
